Gamespy 2.19 Shareware Available

The shareware version Gamespy 2.19 has been released. It includes full Quake III Arena support. You can get it from FilePlanet. Thanks Blue.

Daikatana Status

ION Storm updated their news page with information on what all the members of the Daikatana team are working on to get the game out the door. It had better be perfect out of the box, or the many delays are going to be all for naught.

Lithtech porting to Linux

Now, this is getting to be a foregone conclusion in a lot of game company business plans, but Monolith made an announcement today that LithTech will be ported to Linux. They also said that Shogo will be the first Linux port.

My question is (don't get offended A.T.): Who cares? Shogo is dead. Monolith killed it. Let it lie in Peace.

A.T. Hun comments: I was the biggest rah-rah Shogo guy out there--now I don't really give a rat's. 'Nuff said.

Having said that, if they made Shogo 2 with the LithTech 2 engine, I'd probably buy it in a heartbeat.

Mike Dussault leaves Monolith

Jason Hall, CEO of Monolith, announced in his .plan that Mike Dussault has left Monolith for Valve. Mike was the chief architect behind the LithTech engine, and I'm sure his expertise will be missed.

As pointed out over on the shack, Mike is now adding his graphics engine expertise to that of Jason Zelsnack, Charlie Brown, and Gary McTaggert. That's a HECK of a lot of engine talent. Methinks Valve is gonna become another id at this rate.

A.T. Hun comments: I emailed Mike Dussault a couple of times with Shogo-related questions when I was running The Haus of Shogo. He was always prompt with his responses, even though I'm sure he was quite busy. Hmm. John Jack leaves Lith and now their head engine monkey leaves too. Hmm. It certainly isn't going to help Monolith's future titles much, which is sad considering how quickly they dropped Shogo and Blood 2.

Red Alert to Q3A Server Admins

Well, that certainly didn't take long did it? sCary is reporting that Quake 3 cheats have surfaced already. He gives some screenshots of a "radar" mod that lets you see where everyone is in the level. There is reportedly one auto-aim bot already available and another is being worked on. Add those to the fullbright hacks that I've known about for quite some while.

The folks over at Antibotics are working on fixes as we speak. Until then, the only solution is to use sv_pure 1 on your server. Personally, I don't see why people get so up in arms about sv_pure 1, but that's me. Do you really need a custom HUD? Thankfully, the non-beta Point Release fixed the bug where people were being kicked on level change with sv_pure 1 set.

Obviously there are some people out there who can't help but be incredibly lame. If you need to cheat in online games to get ego gratification, I feel very, very sorry for you.

The Master comments: Here we go again. You'd think people would actually like to enjoy a game for a little while before they kill it off.

Linux on an N64?

In the "hey, that's cool . . . but what's the point?" department, this page deals with someone's attempts to get the N64 to run Linux for a Comp-Sci class. I guess it's all a part of man's never-ending pursuit of devices to take apart and break. Thanks Slashdot.

UDP vs. @Home Lifted

The Usenet Death Penalty did not go into effect yesterday because @Home has taken steps to deal with users with misconfigured proxies, according to this CNet article. It seems pretty clear that the author has an axe to grind with Usenet because the rest of the article deals with Usenet's (at least perceived) dwindling influence on the Net. Thanks Slashdot.

TIE-Tanic

What do you get when you combine George Lucas' epic saga with James Cameron's 18 hour drama of life, love, and big ol' boats? You get TIE-Tanic, of course! Find out what REALLY happened to the Titanic. Download the movie--you'll like it. Thanks Slashdot.

NHL 2000 Roster Update

NHL2000 Online is still borked (no new content since mid-November) so I missed this little tidbit. EA Sports has released a new roster update for NHL 2000 on January 3. EA's FTP server is still dead, but I finally found the update on NHL Wishlist. Thanks guys!

Newer Beta UT D3D Renderer

There has been a new Direct3D Renderer posted on the Unreal Technology page. This fixes some minor bugs in yesterday's beta release (story).

Transmeta and Crusoe

According to this article on ZDNet, Transmeta will be announcing their Crusoe Processors ("world's first family of software-based smart microprocessors.") Wednesday. Transmeta is the home of Linus Torvalds and Dave Taylor (formerly of id). Dave Taylor used to talk about his ideas for processors in his old Crack Dot Com .plans. I guess he got himself noticed :-)

Modwatch

The folks at Square8 (who are also the developers of Webdog) are putting together a new system called Modwatch, which will be able to search, categorize, store, and download mod's for Quake3 and UT. This is a rather exciting development, especially since it dovetails with yesterdays story on Q3A possibly implementing a mod server type system for mod download and install.
