FBI DDOS?

Wraith sent along some news he found on The Hacker News Network. According to this Wired News story, the webmaster of a site which archives all kinds of material related to spy networks claims that his site has come under a DDOS attack after he refused to take down some classified Japanese secrets at the request of the FBI. Coincidence? Kinda makes you go, "Hmmmmmm," doesn't it. Or, as Wraith put it, "I'm telling ya, sometimes it creeps me out to live in the US . . ."

Actually, the whole Carnivore thing creeps me out a lot more than this does. Notice that I said, "creeps me out" not "surprises me." I wouldn't be terribly surprised to find a very small FBI operative living in my sock drawer.

Pondering the Imponderable

Recently I've been getting back into playing guitar. I had a cheap acoustic when I was a kid. I sold my bass five years ago (the worst decision I ever made). Now, I've been doing some research into getting an electric, most likely a Yamaha Pacifica 112M (thanks for the tip, Skip!) or possibly an Ibanez GSA-60. I've been amazed at the amount of information available on the 'Net for learning to play guitar or researching buying a guitar. I wish the Internet would have been around when I was first learning bass--I would have been a much better player.

Star Wars RPG

While I'm stealing all the news from Blue, I came across this press release announcing a Star Wars Role-Playing Game to be made in a joint venture between LucasArts and BioWare (the makers of Baldur's Gate). The game will be set before the events in Episode I. Don't get too excited, the game isn't due to be released until 2002.

Sanity Demo Released

Monolith has released the demo of Sanity: Aiken's Artifact (61M) at Real.Com. It'll be interesting to see what Lith has done with LithTech 2.0 and to see if they fixed some of the problems from 1.x. Thanks Blue's News.

In case you are wondering why Monolith and RealNetworks are in bed together, check out this press release.

GreenMarine on RA:UT

3D Realms' (still getting used to typing that) Brandon "GreenMarine" Reinhart updated his .plan about Rocket Arena 3 for Quake III Arena and it's counterpart for Unreal Tournament. Here's a snip:
Speaking of Rocket Arena 3...wouldn't it be nice if Cliffy said something about what Epic was doing with Rocket Arena UT? I sure would like to know. I had to hand over the reigns on the project to Mike Lambert when I left Epic and I believe Epic is helping direct the project and has some plans for it. Nonetheless, the maps were great and I really want to play it. (Doh! I reread this and it sounds like I'm saying Epic made me hand over the project or something which isn't the case. I passed on RAUT because I didn't have the spare time to work on it. As it is, I'm pretty much working on Duke 24/7, except for some spots of gaming on the weekends.)
So basically he is no longer responsible for RA:UT. I hope someone does something with it. It had a big head start on the Q3A version--I hope it doesn't die on the vine.

ATI sucks one down

The recent Macworld Expo put on by Apple was missing one keynote item when Steve Jobs gave his keynote address. ATI was supposed to demo their RADEON video processor onstage in the first 45 minutes, but instead were practically deleted from the conference. Why, you ask? Well, ATI suffered the wrath of Jobs. Basically, ATI setup a press release that preempted Steve Jobs. Don't ever do that :-)

ATI really can't afford this kind of thing to happen to them. Loose lips may just sink their ship, especially since Nvidia has taken aim at the Mac market.

A.T. Hun comments: Of course, as more than one person has pointed out, this seems like a classic case of cutting off your nose to spite your face. Apple needs hot 3D hardware and they needed to demo the Q3A Mission Pack on their hardware. Jobs' snit cost Apple both. Sometimes it doesn't pay to be a prima donna.
