Webdog goes GPL -- 10:42 pm CST, Update by The Master

According to the Webdog news page, the Webdog client and perl Webdog server will be released shortly under a modified GPL. This should be interesting. Have to take some time to pick up some perl skillz obviously.

Okay-day 2 of the Time-Warner cable modem experiment, and there appears to be a fatal flaw in the experiment. The Chicago node appears to be *ahem* overwhelmed and my access is *ahem* spotty to say the least. I think I'll let Eeyore make the calls to TW, I might just kill them right over the phone if I make the call :-)

New EAX Effects for SoF -- 2:01 pm CST, Update by A.T. Hun

Creative Labs has released new EAL (Environmental Audio Library) files for Soldier of Fortune. The files will be released in three parts. The first adds new EAX effects the deathmatch levels. Hmmm. I may have to find SoF Gold on sale somewhere . . . Thanks Stomped.

In the "kick 'em while their down because they deserve it" department, Evil Avatar spotted this post on the Hardcore Gaming messageboard from Kevin Deselms (aka Hi-Fi), formerly of GameFan.

Well, folks, all good things must come to an end. And so it has, for three of the remaining five GameFan Online staffers who were let go by Express.Com today. I was one of them. Just want to thank you guys for the support you've shown of us, and particularly the enthusiasm you've shown for my videos over the last year and a half or so. Most of you have noticed the lack of them over the past several months - with recent events, I shouldn't have to explain anything (and I can't, because of the NDA I signed during my exit interview).

Can anybody explain to me why someone would sign an NDA as they are being fired?

Micro$oft Buys Stake in Corel -- 10:34 am CST, Update by J.t.Qbe

It's all over the news: Microsoft has purchased ~24 million shares of stock in Corel, owner and current maintainer of WordPerfect and other applications. You can read about it here, here, here and elsewhere, with some commentary by the Linux community here.

My take: Corel has been on the rocks for months now. The writing has been on the wall: Corel needed cash or it would die. For a long time Corel has been competing with Microsoft; now it appears that Microsoft has won. What strategy can be more effective than buying your competition? Microsoft claims to be interested only in Corel's research capabilities. Those who believe that have probably never heard of Microsoft before. Microsoft looks out for Microsoft. I suspect that the ancient lineage of WordPerfect is coming to an end very soon. Too bad. It was a good word processor and part of a good office suite. RIP WP.

Not surprisingly, Lowtax has expressed his feelings on yesterday's interview with an Express.com PR guy (story). Also not surprisingly, he thinks it's a truckload of fertilizer. I've always hoped that we can continue to offer The Haus without banner ads because I find them annoying. Now with all the problems with all these gaming networks (even bringing down the mighty Voodoo Extreme), I'm REALLY glad we don't have to deal with that--thanks to the good people at EZ-Net.

Carmack & Broussard on Consoles -- 10:00 am CST, Update by A.T. Hun

MSXbox has a quick Q&A with id's John Carmack and 3D Realm's George Broussard about consoles and first-person shooters. Personally, I don't think that consoles will ever replace computers, unless M$ does exactly what I expect them to and releases a version of Office for the Xbox . . . Thanks Blue.

Welp, spent a few hours last night downloading monster files that I've been meaning to get around to but haven't. Cable modem made this a painless experience, let me tell ya.

• Counter-Strike 7.1 beta - been meaning to grab this forever, since I had 6 on my machine and did not want to pull the 68mb 7 version. I really wish they did differental patches, because these tremendous downloads for new versions are awful, cable or no.
• MAME32 Q&A - There's a couple of gigantic game image and icon archives on here for MAME. Since I like to keep up with what's going on in the MAME universe, I'd been meaning to grab these. The packs weight in around 30mb when fully downloaded, however, so I've been putting this one off.

Next up is to check out some more demos and movies from some of the games I'm looking forward to (SOF, Alice, etc etc).

A.T. Hun comments: Oh sure, rub it in, now that I'm the only member of The Haus' staff with absolutely no high-speed access . . . although that may change soon.

Jonathan Knight Interview -- 9:49 am CST, Update by A.T. Hun

Next Game posted an interview with Jonathan Wright, Activision's producer for Gray Matter's Return to Castle Wolfenstein. It's an interesting interview, but since Next Game is an Italian site, a bit gets lost in the English translation. I'm somewhat surprised at how many questions he answers by saying, "It's too early to tell." When is this game supposed to come out? Thanks Blue.

NFL Week #5 Final -- 11:33 pm CST, Update by A.T. Hun

Eeyore and I tied at a sad 7-7 this week. That makes me 43-29 and her 29-28. The only really dominant team right now is the St. Louis Rams. Everyone else is inconsistent or worse.

In case you ever wondered what it is like to be an @#^hole, all you have to do is read the interview with nopcode on Barry's World. He created an aimbot (code that aims for you) for Quake III Arena. He basically feels justified because he likes Q2 and Q3A is taking all the players away. The long and the short of it is that he is a whiny jerk who gets his jollies by getting other people mad. For that, I almost pity him. Thanks Stomped.

Gamers.com posted an interview with Daniel Wool, PR director for GameFan. As you may remember, on Friday (story) GameFan gave all its hosted sites until today to find a new host. It sounds like Express.com found out it didn't like GameFan as much as they thought when they purchased them, so they're killing the majority of it off. Thanks Evil Avatar.

These wacky folks at Carnegie Mellon University turned their Palm Pilot into a robot, complete with sensors so it can navigate around its environment. Too cool for words. Complete instructions and source code are included. Thanks Slashdot.

Tom Reviews NVIDIA 0.9-5 -- 4:20 pm CST, Update by A.T. Hun

Tom's Hardware has posted a review of NVIDIA's .09-5 Linux drivers, comparing them to their Windows Detonator 2 and 3 counterparts. I especially liked (and agree with) his comments on the fact that these drivers are not open source. Thanks Linux Games.

Wh00p! The NHL season begins this Wednesday. ESPN and ESPN2 are broadcasting 10 games in the next week. Here's to hoping my beloved Red Wings can capture another Stanley Cup! Drop the $%^&*#!@ puck, ref!

The Master just informed me via ICQ that the Road Runner folks have installed his cable modem, now it's a matter of networking their computers. Hopefully sometime soon I will be leaving the ranks of the bandwidth-challenged as well.
