New RA3 on Sunday

Version 1.5 of the Rocket Arena mod for Quake III Arena will be released this Sunday. It will be available as a 90M full version or a 50M patch (that's some patch!). For the boatload of improvements and fixes, check out the Rocket Arena site. Thanks Stomped.

TFC: The Scout

J emerged from his den and saw his shadow so he sent in another article in his series on Team Fortress Classic! This time, he takes us on a guided tour of the Scout class. If you have the need for speed, this is the class for you! While you are at it, why not check out the other articles we have available in our Gaming Tips section?

The Price of Stupidity

I busted out the ol' adding machine and totaled up the cost for my hand injury. Not counting therapy or follow-up visits, the total bill comes to $4,098.52. Actually, it is the cost for repairing the injury. The injury itself was free. Thankfully, the vast majority of that will be covered by my insurance.

J.t.Qbe comments: Gosh A.T., wouldn't it have been cheaper to keep your hand out of the snow blower? (Yeah, yeah, that was lame. I'm just glad that it wasn't worse!)

A.T. Hun comments: Actually, it probably would have been cheaper to go head-first, but that's an entirely different story. Thankfully, only $368.15 will have to come out of my own pocket.

Red Hat == Profitable

I saw on the Motley Fool this morning that Linux distributor Red Hat has broken even and expects to show a profit for Q1. A Linux company showing a profit? How about that! How long that can be sustained is questionable but I say, more power to them.

And yes, the Motley Fool has quickly become one of my favorite sites to visit.

Mir: Splashdown

The headline says it all. No word on the tacos just yet. She's dead, Jim.

Mir: Rest in Pieces

Rosaviakosmos, the Russian space agency, has begun the space station Mir's final descent. In a couple of hours what's left of it should splash down in the Pacific Ocean. The torch is now passed to the International Space Station. Here's to hoping she does not meet such an ignoble fate in 15 years.

Let's hope we all get free tacos.

New Winamp

There's a brand-spanking new version of Winamp, everybody's favorite Windows MP3 player, available for download. It's version 2.73, to be specific.

More Shogo 2

Daily Radar posted an interview with Monolith's Jason Hall on LithTech 3 and the Xbox. Included was this comment on the Shogo 2 Mecha pictures that hit the Net recently:
If Shogo 2 were underway, it could likely be an Xbox title, but the fact is that the images on the net that are creating that perception are just LithTech Inc. supplied images that are using some art assets to demonstrate RenderStyles. Those images happen to partially contain some Shogo 2 concept stuff. The shots do not come from Monolith, actually they are coming from LithTech Inc.

I cannot confirm or deny a Shogo 2.
Well, that certainly clears things up. *cough* Thanks Blue.

UPDATE! 10:30 P.M. Gamespot has a report on a LithTech engine demo that was shown at GDC that appeared to have Shogo-esque characters in them. Once again, Jason Hall refused to comment on the existence or non-existence of the title. I would anticipate an announcement at GDC or E3.

Verisign Issues Bad Certificates

According to a Microsoft security update issued today, Verisign has issued a set of bad code signing certificates that perport to be from "Microsoft Corporation", but are actually owned by someone with no link to Microsoft.

Thankfully, the certificates will NOT automatically run under the Microsoft certificate names, since certificates are checked by certificate data, not the name. However, be VERY careful approving code signed by "Microsoft Corporation" to run on your system without verifying the certificate (ED: Or run Linux-beat ya to it Qbe :-). I would also highly recommend reading the above link to review the issue in detail.

Ouch. For once Microsoft gets caught by a major security issue that they didn't do to themselves, like normal. It's gotta be a first.
