Return to Wolfenstein Movie

Somebody had a change of heart, because the Return to Castle Wolfenstein video presented at E3 has been released. Blue has a list of mirrors. I'm hoping a few more mirrors pop up because I've been having a terrible time trying to download it.

Quake for Half-Life

Valve has created a mod for Half-Life that makes it play like the original Quake. The mod is called Deathmatch Classic or DMC for short. You can get the scoop on Shacknews or GameSpy. All the models, sounds, and textures are new (but obviously inspired by the original), but all the physics are the same. The maps included will be versions of DM2, DM3, DM4, DM6, and E1M2. The mod is supposed to be released "real soon". Thanks Blue.

Now my big questions are these: will mappers be allowed to make conversions of old Quake maps and, if so, when will someone port E1M8?

The Master comments: Yeah! I wanna play some Ziggurat Vertigo dang it! I do wonder how well that map would play in another game tho. I doubt it would feel quite the same.

Tom on nForce

Tom's Hardware has an analysis of NVIDIA's nForce chipset. I'm very interested to see what kind of performance you'll be able to get out of such a system. It could make ubiquitous 3D graphics a reality. At the same time they manage to give both Intel and Creative Labs some serious competition--something they both seriously need. If the price is right, they might have a winner. Can you imagine this bad-boy in a laptop?

Hey NVIDIA! How 'bout a Linux driver?

Q3A Dreamcast Levels

Gamers.com got in touch with id's Todd Hollenshead who confirmed that the Dreamcast Quake III Arena levels will be released "real soon" for the PC.I think I'll believe that right about the time I see the new patch. Stomped.

Pondering the Imponderable

OK, I'm more than a little frustrated. I've been trying for the better part of six months to my wireless Internet setup working in Linux. Most stuff works OK, but I can't play Quake III Arena. I tried one card that won't let me connect at all and another that will connect but the driver reboots my computer after playing for a couple of minutes. Talking to the companies is worthless because the drivers are unsupported. For the one card one guy is writing the driver. He has been very helpful, but we are no closer to figuring out the problem than we were in October. There's only so much one guy can do when the driver business is not his full-time job.

Now I love Linux. But this crappy driver support will keep it from being widely accepted. I can't use my scanner, and likely never will. Creative has been promising official drivers for as long as I can remember, but still hasn't delivered. The only bright spot is NVIDIA's excellent drivers which are routinely trashed my self-appointed Linux zealots because they are not open source. BIG FREAKING DEAL! The majority of the open source drivers I use are half-baked and the one binary-only one I use works nicely. I'll take "functional" over "open" any old day. Open is great in theory, but if it doesn't work, it doesn't work.

I think I better have a little lie-down.
