Just Say "No" to MS

In today's world, it may be impossible to rid yourself of Microsoft software completely. However, Dan Gillmor's latest column, A revolutionary pursuit: freedom from Microsoft urges us at least to consider Microsoft's agenda and where/whether we want to fit in. Microsoft asks you, "Where do you want to go today?" Do you want to go where it's going to tell you to go tomorrow?

A.T. Hun comments: I'm thisclose to being able to dump Windows. More details to follow . . .

Unrelated rant: the other day the breakup judgment against Microsoft was overturned, and the media did its best to sound like the entire monopoly judgment was reversed--which it wasn't. Microsoft is still guilty of being a monopoly and using its monopoly power illegally to stifle competition.

That didn't prevent an idiot in a man-on-the-street interview from claiming that "Microsoft has the best products, and that's why everyone buys them." Uh, hello? Monopoly. . . illegal use. . . stifling competition. . . aw, forget it. Some people will never get it.

VMS for Itanium?

This week's announcement that Compaq is abandoning the Alpha platform brought some other interesting news: Compaq will also be porting VMS to the Itanium. The newsgroups have been buzzing about this one (check out comp.os.vms); many are pessimistic. I think it'd be pretty cool if it happens, but will the challenge be too much? Both the VAX and Alpha platforms were designed with VMS in mind. The Itani(um|c) wasn't. Will it swim or sink?

Slackware 8.0 Released

Get it while it's hot! Rats, I just installed and configured Mandrake on my home machine. Might have to get rid of it--I've been a Slackware fan since '96. Check it out at http://www.slackware.com.

Anachronox Demo Monday?

ION Storm's Tom "T." Hall updated his .plan with news on the impending release of the Anachronox demo. Here's the goods:
We're in da middle of finishing demo stuff...

Likely Monday before Eidos can test and approve it... so it's a-comin'...

Once that's out, we'll take a well-earned vacation... then get back at it!

BTW, thanks for all the nice comments on the forums. Hope we've been helpful with our answers! We love the Anachronox universe, so we want to help folks anyway we can. :)

Mozilla 0.9.2 Released

Version 0.9.2 of the popular Mozilla open-source web browser has been released! Get downloading! Mozilla 0.9.1 has been pretty sweet. There's been some nice new bug fix/stability patches recently so if you haven't checked out Mozilla recently, 0.9.2 would be a good candidate.
