Code Red

Updated! 10:24 AM

K-just did some informal stats on Code Red. I'm sure A.T. will add to this in the morning:

Hit count for various systems from Code Red worm:
The Master: 301 hits from 3:30 PM CST Aug 4
Eeyore: 254 from 3:30 PM CST Aug 4
The Haus server: 124 from Jul 30-Aug 4.

Okay, mayhaps this thing is getting a bit out of hand again?

A.T. Hun comments: 65 in the past 22 hours (although for whatever reason it doesn't seem to hit much in the wee hours of the morning).

New ZoneAlarm

A new version of the extremely cool ZoneAlarm firewall for Windows has been released. This brings it to version 2.6.231 and fixes a number of bugs. If you have high-speed Internet access (cable, DSL, etc.), don't let someone take over your box. Grab ZoneAlarm now! Did I mention that it is free?

The Master comments: Oh, BTW: NONE of the personal firewall software will protect an internet exposed web server from the Code Red virus. If you REALLY want to run a publicly accessable ANYTHING nowadays, you'd better keep on top of your patches, and I would recommend a application-level scanning firewall like Raptor or the Symantec Enterprise firewall (no affiliation, yadda yadda). Prepare to pay real money for it too. Security does not come cheap. But it's better than what's going on right now on the Internet.

Pondering the Imponderable

I bought a UPS today for my system. We had a few power blips recently after which my computer did not want to restart. Thankfully it just had to power down for a bit then it fired back up. Now I won't have to worry about it. It's an APC Back-UPS Office which is quite nice, but the PowerChute software required me to add a couple of lines to the .ini to get it to work. I had to add
Network=0
Tcp/Ip=No
to the [Communication] section. It took me several hours of digging through help files to find that. Since I have DSL, it assumed that I was on a network and my UPS was out there in TCP/IP land someplace. Now to get it to work in Linux. Yep, APC supplies Linux drivers!

Code Red is still hitting my firewall like crazy. For the past hour it has hit about every five minutes from different IPs. Sheesh. Note to morons: patch your servers!

Mozilla 0.9.3 Released!

Version 0.9.3 of the Mozilla open-source web browser suite has been released! Stability has been excellent since 0.9.2, hopefully this one will be even better. If you've been looking for an excuse to download Mozilla, you just found it.

Pondering the Imponderable

OK, Code Red can go away now. I'm getting a hit to my firewall every 20 minutes from the stupid thing. Sheesh. Granted, it can't do anything to me but it sure is messing up the logs.
