WinXP: Should You Worry?

The Firing Squad has a rather surprising article on Windows XP and why you should be concerned about it. I'm rather surprised to see something like this on a website like FS. If you are considering (or have no choice) getting WinXP on your next computer, think through that decision carefully . . .

J.t.Qbe comments: Very interesting article--went a little overboard at the end, or did it? The question is, how many of those who are wailing about XP are really going to say 'no'? In a year or two, you won't be able to buy a prebuilt PC without XP. You won't be able to play any of the new flashy games without XP. Most people will cave in and sell their souls for a little eye candy.

Classic CTF Screenies

The Classic CTF team released 16 screenshots of maps that will be included in their joint Quake III Arena mod with the Threewave folks. I'm really looking forward to this. It's supposed to be out "soon". Thanks Evil Avatar.

Allchin on Windows XP

ZDNet has an interview with Microsoft's Jim Allchin on Windows XP. I read this one on my PDA in the middle of the night last night during a nasty allergy attack. I don't know which made me feel worse, the allergies or how Allchin avoided answering the interviewer's most pointed questions.

M$: No More Buffer Overflows

According to Security Watch, Microsoft is claiming that they have eliminated all buffer overflows in Windows XP. Why don't they just go out and dare all the crackers out there? Anybody out there believe them on this? I didn't think so.

Windows in Linux

ZDNet has an article comparing five ways to run Windows in Linux. It's a handy thing for those applications that just aren't there (or not quite there) for Linux yet. Thanks Slashdot.

SOF Platinum released

Whilst I'm waiting for my son to wake up from his nap so I can go home, I read a Kenn Hoekstra .plan update indicating the new Soldier of Fortune: Platinum edition is available online. Kenn has also added mirrors to the update, so go forth and download all SOF fans.

A.T. Hun comments: Hopefully Loki will get a patch for the Linux version out too so I could actually play online, although I'm not holding my breath.

Pondering the Imponderable

I was just flipping through the channels and I happened to catch Alien Ant Farm's cover of Michael Jackson's "Smooth Criminal." A cool cover and a cool video. Quite a bit heavier than the original :)

Last Sunday we had our fantasy football draft which I missed for the second year in a row. Thus my team was chosen for me again. We'll see how the old Fightin' Wombats do this year.
