NFL Predictions

Since everyone is giving their predictions of who will make the playoffs this year in the National Football League, I thought I'd make my picks too so I can look back and laugh in December. Here we go!You heard it here first!

Unix Turns 1.0E9

That's a billion, for you math skippers. Today's my mother-in-law's birthday, which means it's also the day of the apocalypse/real Y2K/momentous event of your choice. This evening at 9:46 Eastern, Unix time rolls over to 1 billion seconds since the epoch (that's January 1, 1970 for you Windows types). Sure, it's only a symbolic event, but worthy of celebration anyway. Hey, I think I'll open up that bottle of Salvator tonight.

A.T. Hun comments: Mmmmmm, Paulaner Salvator. I've got one in the fridge for just such an occasion . . .

Nerve Interview

Gamespy has an interview with Nerve's Brandon James about their work on the multiplayer portion of Return to Castle Wolfenstein and just a smidge on their as-yet-unannounced new id franchise. Thanks Evil Avatar.

Football!

Welp, since I'm getting things together early here, I'm gonna throw up Eeyore's picks for the NFL this week: Vikings, Ravens, Packers, Jets, Patriots, Chiefs, Saints, Steelers, Seahawks, Bucs, Falcons, Eagles, Chargers, Dolphins, Broncos.

A.T. Hun comments: And my picks . . . (drumroll please): Ravens, Packers, Bucs, Colts, Raiders, Saints, Bengals (!), Seahawks, Steelers, Vikings, 49ers, Rams, Redskins, Titans, Broncos. The different picks are underlined. Quite a few this time! Plus we have an odd number different so there will be no ties this week!

Kyro Linux Drivers on the Way

PowerVR is making Kyro drivers for Linux. The big debate is to whether or not all or part of the code will be open source. Let's hope they don't waste too many brain cells debating. Good Kyro drivers would be an excellent complement to NVIDIA's drivers for Linux fans. Thanks Stomped.

UT Single Player Mod

Team Vortex has released a demo of their single-player mod for Unreal Tournament called Operation Na Pali. I may just have to reinstall Unreal Tournament to give this puppy a spin! It looks pretty slick. Thanks Blue.

Bloodbath 7 Beta 1 Released

Our very own Wraith has released the first beta of his Bloodbath 7 mod for Quake III Arena. The mod makes everything go "boom" in bigger, better, and prettier ways. Check it out for yourself!

Linux Trojan Discovered

A company called Qualys "discovered" a new Trojan Horse that attacks Linux. It seems to me like Qualys is just trying to make a name for itself. The only way this Trojan can cause problems is if the root user would manually run it. In other words, it's a danger if you are a moron. The company claims this Trojan could have the impact of Code Red. I suppose that could be true, if Linux sysadmins would all suddenly get a lobotomy. Perhaps they don't understand the different between a Trojan Horse and a buffer overflow exploit? Thanks Linux Today.

DoJ Decision: Good for Linux

Dennis Powell at Linux Today claims that yesterday's decision by the Department of Justice not to break up Microsoft is good for Linux. He lists several reasons why, although the most compelling is this one. One of the DoJ's provisions under consideration is:
Requiring Microsoft to make its APIs available to competitors. This could well include its application file formats.
This could change everything. Can you imagine what would happen if they had to publish their API and especially the Word file format? WINE and every Linux Office suite would instantly improve. Let's hope this comes to pass.

J.t.Qbe comments: I've spent the last day trying to figure this out. The DoJ isn't caving in, so what are they after? According to NPR last night, they want to get on with remedies instead of having them held up in appeals. I hope they get some good remedies and soon.
