GameCube Released

Nintendo has released their latest console system, the GameCube. Once again, I find myself compelled to say, "Rah."

NetFilter/IPTables Primer

SysAdmin has an overview of NetFilter/iptables for Linux showing how to use it and why you would want to. NetFilter is the new stateful firewall built into the 2.4.x Linux kernel. Soon I hope to convert my ipchains firewall to iptables. We'll have to see how that goes. Thanks Linux Today.

Wolfie Interview

NVIDIA cornered id's Todd Hollenshead to talk to him about Return to Castle Wolfenstein which recently went gold. It does contain a bit of blatant NVIDIA-plugging but hey, it's still Wolfie. Thanks Blue.

Random Slashdot Generator

Leave it to BBspot. They managed to produce a random Slashdot story generator. See if you can tell the difference between this and the real thing! Here's my favorite:
An anonymous raedder wrote in to say that "Ximian wil begin selling their own CueCat Beowulf clusters. They're going to be working with AOL so you can expect a stupid name." I dont see any practical aplication fro these, but I'l probably get one anyway.

NFL Week #10

Is it really week #10 already? Yikes! Anyway, here are my killer NFL picks: Dolphins, Seahawks, Packers, Eagles, Ravens, Titans, 49ers, Saints, Raiders, Steelers, Lions (gasp!), Broncos, Bucs, Rams, Giants.

The Master comments: Eeyore's picks: Packers, Saints, Eagles, Ravens, 49er's, Bengals, Dolphins, Seahawks, Raiders, Steelers, Lions, Broncos, Bucs, Rams, Vikings.

Diablo II as a Family

The New York Times has an article on how the author and his son play Diablo II. My time spent on D2 has been well-documented. I'm sure I'm going to be that guy in six years when my eldest son turns 10. Of course, I still won't be as old as he is now :) It's a neat story, one of no doubt countless ones in our country. Thanks Planet Diablo.

J.t.Qbe comments: Pathetic. When you're playing Diablo with your son, A.T., it'll be D4 at least, maybe D5.

JKII Website Open

The official Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast website is now online. It includes several new screenshots, concept art, and model pictures. I'm really looking forward to this game. Hopefully they'll do a Linux binary. Thanks Blue.

Ext3 Explained

IBM's developerWorks explains everything you cared to know about the new ext3 filesystem for Linux and why you would like it. Basically it adds journaling capabilities to the ubiquitous ext2 filesystem. The amazing thing in my mind is that if you cleanly unmount an ext3 partition is can immediately be remounted as ext2. They briefly compare it to ReiserFS as well. I will be running ext3 as soon as I upgrade to Red Hat 7.2. Thanks Slashdot.

The Carmack on ATI's Drivers

id's John Carmack updated his .plan today, weighing in on ATI's specific changes to their drivers to make Quake 3 run faster (story). As usual, Carmack gives an in-depth analysis of the whole situation and gives you plenty to ponder. Good stuff from the Guru.
