GeForce4 Unveiled

NVIDIA has taken the wraps off its new GeForce4 Titanium and MX chips. Basically it is a faster GeForce3 with an additional shader unit and better Z-occlusion culling (according to AnandTech that means that "the GeForce4, clock for clock, is approximately 25% more efficient at discarding unseen pixels than the GeForce3.") That's a bit of an oversimplification, so just check out AnandTech's article on the GeForce4 and all will become clear. They even benchmark the cards with a new test based on Epic's Unreal Warfare technology. The benchmarks of the GeForce4 Ti 4600 are amazing, but so will be its $400 price tag.

Hmmm. Just in time for a new video card decision! The GeForce4 Ti 4200 might be interesting--but it is two months off. Of course, GeForce3 Ti 200 prices should drop too. Decisions, decisions. The GeForce4 MX doesn't seem to be worth anything as it is merely a glorified GeForce2. Having said that, it's pretty remarkable to see GeForce2-level technology as a "value" card. The days of everyone having sweet 3D acceleration are near.

Mozilla 0.9.8 Released

Version 0.9.8 of the open-source Mozilla web-browsing suite has been released. You can check out the release notes here. I plan on downloading and installing this bad-boy as soon as I get the "basics" up and running again on my new box.

w00t!

I'm typing this from my new Athlon 1800+ box! There's obviously a few bugs to work out yet, but it's at least going. I had some "issues" last night, but a BIOS upgrade seems to have nipped those in the bud. The worst was that everytime I tried to reboot, my system would shut all the way down for about three seconds then start up again. I was afraid I was going to kill my hard drive. Now it's just a matter of updating everything. Erp.

The Master comments: Heh-I had a rapid power cycling issue when I built Eeyore's old machine out. Blew the power supply sky high. Smoke and sparks and everything. That was fun. NOT.
