There And Back Again

It's been a busy week for Haus staff, apparently. I spent the week back at the mother ship--er, home office--in the Twin Cities. I spent the week visiting with people I haven't seen in a year, attending brainstorming/design meetings, and drinking more beer than I've had all year (not that that's too tough this year). It was a good week and I hope to do it again, but not too soon. I hate Minnesota winters.

Bleh

What a long week. I spent most of Monday and Tuesday recovering from one of those bad server moments that no-one likes to remember at work. Then I went to Chicago to attend the ScanTech (or whatever they're calling it nowadays) convention. Got to look at wireless handheld computing for our warehouses. Cool stuff, and man has it gotten cheap. Today I'm going to be helping move furniture for a carpet shampooing and setting up a crib for the imminent arrival. Fear :-)

NFL Week #4 Picks

I'm going to be gone the majority of the rest of the week, so here are my picks for this weekend's games a little early. I hope that they are more like last week's 13-1 and less like the previous week's 6-10. Rams (eep!), Bills, Saints, Dolphins, Packers, Steelers, Jaguars, Eagles, Giants, Bucs, Patriots, Raiders, Seahawks, Broncos.

The Master comments: Eeyore's picks: Rams, Bills, Saints, Dolphins, Panthers, Steelers, Jaguars, Eagles, Giants, Bucs, Patriots, Raiders, Vikings, Broncos

Teamspeak Linux Client RC1

The Teamspeak team has issued release candidate 1 of the Linux client of their voice-over-IP program. Basically, it is intended to allow you to use voice communications in online games, much like Roger Wilco. I've got to try this one out. Thanks Linux Games.

Ironically, I was just talking with my dad yesterday about various VOIP solutions. Hmmm.

Linux NWN Update

I noticed this the other day, but forgot to post it. I must be getting old. Bioware updated their Neverwinter Nights Linux client page with the status of the port and a couple of new screenshots. Here's the news:

We now have some simple sounds working in the game. There are still issues to work out, but various in-game sounds (such as gui sounds, footstep sounds, and combat sounds) are playing. We've also managed to fix up most of the remaining known input and graphical glitches.

The Death of 3dfx

The FiringSquad talked with a super-secret insider who chronicles the history and death of 3dfx. The article talks about what led up to the company's downfall and what plans they had for future chips. I guess it's no big surprise that one or two major goof-ups are enough to destroy a company with razor-thin margins. It seems like I was also correct in that the purchase of STB was the (or one of the) beginning of the end. Thanks Slashdot.
