ToddH Interview

Games Domain posted an interview with id CEO Todd Hollenshead about the progress of the various sequels/ports of Return to Castle Wolfenstein and a bit on DOOM III. Here's a snip:

GD: Do you think there are any specific problems with putting a first-person shooter on to a console?

TH: Well, in the past, as a -- until recently -- lifetime keyboard and mouse kind of a guy, you had the whole user interface issue. So a lot of hardcore FPS gamers said, "well, first-person games are really only meant to be played on a PC." And I would say there was even a little buy-in to that idea at id. But, especially with PS2 and Xbox with the dual sticks, where you can move with one and look with the other, then given the gameplay design for Return to Castle Wolfenstein, and given that a lot of that was console game-inspired in the pacing and how the game worked. You know, we did some tweaks with the controls, with the aiming assistant, and the weapons selection process, those sort of things, to make it so that the controls didn't detract from the game, but it was still challenging. You can turn the aim assistant on and off, if you want to be really skilled and deft with the controller, you can go for head-shots, use the sniper weapon, those sorts of things - the auto-aim becomes a bit of a hindrance, since it goes for dead-centre.

NFL Week #17

Since we're going to be heading out for the family Christmas today, I figure I'd better get Eeyore's picks up before we take off: Giants, Raiders, Bills, Vikings, Dolphins, Saints, Steelers, Redskins, Falcons, Titans, Colts, Broncos, Packers, Chargers, Bucs, 49ers.

A.T. Hun comments: Ahh, the last weekend of the regular season. An amazing 12 of the 16 games have playoff implications! I'm going to post my Saturday picks now and my Sunday ones later. For today: Giants, Raiders. Same as Eeyore.

UPDATE! Now that today's games are over, here are the rest of my picks for this weekend: Steelers, Redskins, Titans, Bills, Falcons, Vikings, Dolphins, Saints, Colts, Jets, Broncos, Chargers, Bucs, 49ers.
