DVDs and devfsd

Mandrake 9.0 uses devfsd to manage devices. That means that all the devices are set up dynamically after every boot. Most DVD-playing software looks for the DVD device at /dev/dvd. After a quick Google search, I determined what I had to add to my /etc/devfsd.conf file to make sure that a symbolic link was created from my CD-RW/DVD drive to /dev/dvd. Here's what I added:

# Create a /dev/dvd symlink
REGISTER        ^scd0$ CFUNCTION GLOBAL mksymlink $devname dvd
UNREGISTER      ^scd0$ CFUNCTION GLOBAL unlink dvd

Please note, this assumes that the DVD device is /dev/scd0. Check your /etc/fstab file to find out what the proper device name is for your system. For more information, check out man devfsd.conf.

New Combo Drive

I was at Wal-Mart today (no affiliation, yadda, yadda) and saw that they have the LG GCC-4480B for $75. Quite a deal. The 4480B is a 48x/24x/48x CD-RW and a 16x DVD-ROM combo drive. It works very nicely in both Windows and Linux. Now I just have to figure out how to get Mt. Rainier support working in Linux. That will be far too cool. You'd better snag one of these before they realize that they are too cheap.

Mozilla 1.3 Released

A.T.'s still on the road home so I'll beat him to the punch on this one: Mozilla version 1.3 has now been officially released. Get it here.

A.T. Hun comments: I knew that would happen. I'm now running 1.3 final. I've been very happy with the way that the spam filtering has been working in the beta builds. That feature all by itself makes Mozilla Mail worthwhile. Add that on to the most standards-compliant browser available and you've got a powerful package. Do yourself a favor and give Mozilla a spin!

GeForce FX 5200 and 5600 Review

HardOCP posted their GeForce FX 5200 and 5600 review. The results are mixed, to put it mildly. It seems that NVIDIA's new chips can't keep up with ATI's at the same image quality. As a matter of fact, without FSAA or anisotropic filtering, the GeForce4 Ti4200 outperforms the FXs on a number of the benchmarks. I guess I'll be waiting a generation to upgrade. Gotta be ready for DOOM III, don'tcha know :)
