Let the Games Begin!

Now that the formality (for Red Wings' fans) of the NHL regular season schedule is over, it's time for the real season to begin: the Stanley Cup Playoffs! First on tap for the Wings are the ever-pesky Anaheim Mighty Ducks. My prediction? Red Wings in five. ESPN has a page for this series that's worth checking out.

NWN Linux Client: Beta 4

Bioware has released beta 4 of their Linux client for Neverwinter Nights. Here's a list of the fixes:

I suggest you download it and partake of its chocolatey goodness. Or something.

icculus .plan Update

Ryan "icculus" Gordon updated his .plan with information on the status of his various porting projects. He also announced that he is porting Devastation to Linux too. Apparently he doesn't need sleep. Thanks Linux Games.

Pondering the Imponderable

Things are beginning to settle down a bit with my Mandrake 9.1 installation. The new glibc still has Crossover, WineX, and the Loki installer at least partially broken. XFree86 4.3 doesn't seem to like the way SDL apps change the screen resolution (or, perhaps, vice versa). Those two items will occur with any new Linux distribution. I did get proper antialiasing working by downloading the FreeType2 RPMs from the PLF (or you could follow the instructions on this page). They also enabled me to get my DVDs playing properly again.

With the new FreeType2, antialiasing TrueType fonts looks very nice. The xft-enabled version of Mozilla that ships with Mandrake 9.1 looks awesome. I set KDE to turn off antialiasing for font sizes under 13 points, since that causes legibility problems on some sites. Fonts also look very nice in OpenOffice.org now too. If they only would get a WordPerfect importer done, I would switch over.

All told, I'm pretty happy with Mandrake 9.1. I'll be even happier once the glibc 2.3 issues are resolved. Until that's done, I can't get the Crossover plugin to work at all. I can play Jedi Knight II in WineX with a little bit of hacking (story). Now if I can figure out how to get Mt. Rainier support working for my CD-RW/DVD drive . . .
