Beware the Nigerian Scam

Florida's Sun-Sentinal newspaper has an article on a retiree who was ripped off via the Nigerian scam. The man lost about $320,000 and now is in debt up to his eyeballs. The most amazing part is that he thinks that the scammers were on the up-and-up with him. Thanks Slashdot.

My inbox gets flooded with this garbage every week. As a Christian, the worst part about this for me is that more and more they are trying to prey on people's faith. This undoubtably impacts legitimate charities or people with real needs because it becomes very hard to tell who is telling the truth and who is a charlatan. The old adage is correct: if something sounds too good to be true, chances are that it is.

Pondering the Imponderable

I just made it through the end of chapter two in Hordes of the Underdark. That's some pretty amazing stuff. It ends with several epic battles involving dozens and dozens of troops on both sides. I was amazed that my framerate didn't turn into a slideshow. There was also a plot twist of Biblical proportions. I liked Shadows of Undrentide, but I'm loving Hordes of the Underdark. So far, it's my favorite of all the NWN games' single-player campaigns.

In other news, we traditionally open gifts on Christmas Eve. My inlaws brought their gifts ahead of time, so it looks like Santa's sleigh blew up in our living room. That's not even all of it. My folks come next week . . . Looks like my family is doing all they can to stimulate the economy.

NFL Week #16 Final

As we bid farewell to Monday Night Football until August, I was 10-6 this week while Eeyore was 11-5. We would have tied, but I did my picks in a hurry and accidentally posted the Bills instead of the Fish. Oh well. Year to date, that makes me 159-81 (.663) while Eeyore is 157-83 (.654). Only one week before the playoffs, which means only one week until the mercy-killing that is the end of another Lions' season.

The LG Saga Continues

22 days, still no drive. I called LG just now. They claimed that they are still out of stock and wouldn't ship until after the holidays. They told me to call back on Monday. If there's still nothing then, I'm going to push for them to upgrade me to a DVD+/- burner or something. Thus, it's going to be at least four weeks from the time I sent the drive out until the time I get it.

J.t.Qbe comments: Wow, quite a runaround you're getting.

Yesterday I needed a new CD-ROM drive so I ran down to OfficeMax to get the Mad Dog burner they had on sale for $14.95 after rebates. They were out, but gave me a Pacific Digital 52x24x52 for $14.95 out the door. I didn't complain.
