Rover Roves On -- 10:28 am CST, Update by A.T. Hun
The Mars Rover, Spirit, has left its landing platform and has gone a few feet on to Martian soil. It's counterpart, Opportunity, is scheduled to land on the 25th. What could be cooler than a remote-controlled car on Mars?
The Master comments: One that could drive around for more than a 3 month mission. Dang, that's a lot of money for a short stay.
A.T. Hun comments: As long as environmentalists get their undies in a bundle about a nuclear power source, we're stuck with solar panels which means a very short life expectancy.
The Master comments: Anyone interested in Mars exploration should check out the Mars Scorecard. Good for a chuckle :-)

Burning Issues with Linux 2.4.x -- 11:30 am CST, Update by A.T. Hun
I'm beginning to wonder if there isn't another culprit for the high-speed CD burning problems I've been having. If what I'm reading is correct, the ATAPI drivers for Linux don't properly support DMA transfers for CD burners. I watched top when I was burning a disc. Once the transfer rate got around 40x, my CPU usage on my Athlon XP 1800+ was around 92%. The 2.6 kernel is supposed to fix this, but I'm not sure I want to wade into those waters just yet. The good news is that I got the burner working without the ide-scsi kludge. We'll see what I decide to do from here.
