Pondering the Imponderable

My upgrade to Slackware 10.0 is basically complete. There are still a few bugs to iron out. This much is for sure: I would like to find the person or persons who came up with the idea of udev (or devfs for that matter) and beat them repeatedly. Ugh. What a waste of code.

Update! Sometimes the simplest solutions are the hardest to see. udev was installed as a package, so removing that package made it go buh-bye. Thank heavens. Call me when it's not alpha.

J.t.Qbe comments: I just got my Slack 10 install up and running too. Unfortunately KDE never gets along with my old Soundblaster AWE64...but Linux in general has never liked that card.

While waiting for Slackware to install this afternoon, I tracked down the local ham radio Field Day event and paid a visit. The local club had 4 stations set up all running on battery power. I was able to make 3 contacts using 5 watts, which is pretty good. If you get a chance, track down your local radio club's setup and pay a visit before 2pm Sunday. You'll get a chance to see what's going on behind the scenes when emergencies strike in your community.

Upgrade to Slackware 10

I just spent too much time backing up everything imaginable to CD-Rs (time to invest in a DVD burner, methinks) in preparation for my upgrade to Slackware 10. I'm sure that I forgot to backup something and I will be cursing my own name later. At any rate, soon the upgrade process will begin. See you from Slack 10!
