Pondering the Imponderable

I just saw my first pinky demon in DOOM3. Hehehemuhaha. *cough* Unfortunately, I was nearly mauled because I was spending so much time admiring how cool it looked. Man, where are those Linux binaries?!?

WINE-ing about DOOM3

Well, I got DOOM3 yesterday from Circuit City (no affiliation, yadda, yadda) for $44.99. I did manage to get it working with plain old WINE. Unfortunately, there are some graphics issues. The two main ones are that the terminals you are supposed to interact with are all static and the framerates are what might be considered puke-inducing. There's also a nasty problem with the flashlight that blocks a good chunk of the lower right part of the screen. I was able to play enough to know that it is a genuinely spooky, immersive game--way different from any previous id title, IMO. Details will follow, likely after the Linux client is finally released.

No More Free Windows Update CD

I'm not sure why this happened, but Microsoft is no longer making the free Windows update CD available. I don't know if they figure the impending (some day) release of XP SP2 is enough? Thankfully, I already ordered and received the CD. One of these days I'm going to have to dust the kids' Win98 box and I'll need it.

DOOM3 Blues

I think I need to get DOOM3 and those Linux binaries pretty soon. I'm reading way too many reviews and am afraid that the whole game is going to be ruined for me. I really wish sites would say "Hey! We're going to show you a picture of the boss character now, mkay?" I've heard about this ugly hack to get the game working with the Cedega (WineX) CVS. I don't think I want to try that, but if I get desperate enough . . . Hopefully there will be some official word on the status of the Linux binaries soon.
