The Making of Half-Life 2

Gamespot posted an article on the final hours of Half-Life 2 including a confession that they knew the game would not make the September 30, 2003, shipping date many months before that. No shocker there. I've a feeling that if H-L2 is as a great a game as the original, all will be more than forgiven. The article is called "the final hours," but it really covers the whole development and the challenges along the way. Thanks Blue's News.

Early NFL Week #10 Picks

Since I'm going to be AWOL this weekend, here are my picks for this weekend's games in the NFL: Chiefs, Ravens, Lions, Falcons, Steelers, Seahawks, Titans, Colts, Bengals, Packers, Giants, 49ers, Patriots, Eagles. Man, there are a lot of crappy games this weekend. I reserve the right to change these picks before Sunday morning :)

The Master comments: Eeyore's picks: Ravens, Bears, Jaguars, Colts, Chiefs, Steelers, Rams, Falcons, Redskins, 49ers, Packers, Giants, Patriots, Eagles.

X-Wing and Cedega

I was perusing the Cedega forums and found out that you can get the X-Wing Collector's Series CDs (Win95 versions of X-Wing, TIE Fighter, along with all the add-on mission packs and a demo of X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter) working in Cedega. I've been flying a few missions in X-Wing for old times' sake. The sound crackles a bit and my joystick doesn't quite want to calibrate, but other than that it's pretty slick. Too bad X-Wing Alliance won't work . . .

icculus Interview

Macologist interviewed Ryan "icculus" Gordon about his attempts at porting various games to the Mac and Linux. The article is on a Mac-oriented site, but it gives good background into the trials and travails of trying to get games on non-Windows boxen. icculus is my hero because without him, I wouldn't be playing UT2K3 or UT2K4. Thanks Beyond Unreal.

Nullsoft/Winamp Are No More

The remaining original members of the Nullsoft team have left AOL, meaning that continued improvement on Winamp will cease. AOL pulled off one of the craziest purchases in the 90s (and that's saying something) by buying Nullsoft for, gulp, $100 million. Since I've been using Linux, I've used XMMS for my MP3/Ogg playing needs. It even supports Winamp skins! Check it out. Whaddaya suppose is the over/under on the Winamp 5 source code "accidentally" being leaked to the Net? Thanks Slashdot.

The Master comments: The over/under: Anyone who even vaguely mouses anywhere near said source code can NEVER write ANYTHING sound or music related, or else get sued by AOL. That might be a revenue stream in a few years, just look at the RIAA and SCO.
