NFL Week #14 So Far

With one game to go, Eeyore leads me by one game 13-2 to 12-3. Pretty spiffy. I'm ticked because my Lions choked away a double-digit lead to lose to the Green Bay Satanists Packers. However, my Fightin' Wombats won in the first round of the playoffs against the second-place team in our league! It was payback time because that team did the same thing to my Wombats last year when the situation was reversed. Not only do I get to advance, but I am guaranteed enough money to at least cover my entry fee. Actually, my team played so well that I would have beaten every other team in the playoffs . . . and I still have two players who are in tonight's contest!

No. 1 Reason to Use OpenOffice

This commentary pretty much hits the nail on the head. The main reason for people to use OpenOffice over MS Office is not cost. The best reason is OpenOffice's open file format. This is the main reason that I now use OO instead of WordPerfect for most of my stuff. Even if OO would cease to exist, all you have to do is unzip the file and your content is a quick Perl script away. Word's DOC format is the main thing that locks people in. Changing it guarantees upgrades. I get sick to death of idiots people sending me DOC files with a paragraph and a half in it which would be about five times smaller as plain text. Thanks Slashdot.

WinFS Delayed Again

Ars Technica is reporting that Microsoft's much-hyped WinFS filesystem has been delayed again. It was originally supposed to be in Longhorn (which has since been delayed), then in Longhorn Server, now it's pushed off into the nebulous future--at least until 2008. WinFS sounds like very cool technology, but with a development time this long and constant delays you have to wonder what it will turn out like. Unless, of course, MS just promoted it WAY early with very little, if any, usable code.
