Wal-Mart Make-Your-Own CDs -- 1:51 pm CST, Update by A.T. Hun
Wal-Mart has a new online service where you can make your own CDs for $0.88 a track. You can choose the title and cover art for your CD. The discs take 3-4 days to arrive. This is a very smart idea, one that I suggested five years ago. I wish the price per track was a bit lower, though. The selection is quite good. For example, I found 266 tracks for bluesman Howlin' Wolf alone.
Kevin Smith Reviews Episode III -- 1:09 pm CST, Update by A.T. Hun
Kevin Smith (the actor/director otherwise known as Silent Bob) got to see Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and gives his review. Note: this was posted on Slashdot and you know what happens to webservers that incur /.'s fury. Also be forewarned that there are some significant spoilers in the review. He sums it up with two words: %^*#ing awesome. I can't wait . . .
Update! Here's a mirror for your viewing pleasure.
Supreme Ruler 2010 Gold -- 12:35 pm CST, Update by The Master
I saw an announcement on Blue's about Supreme Ruler 2010, a new RTS game being released by Battlegoat Studios (heh). From the screenshots I'm seeing, this looks like an interesting variation on the RTS concept, with a near-future world driving a game based on modern economies and militaries. Larry Bond wrote a forward for them too, which is pretty cool.

What's coming in Linux Kernel 2.6.12 -- 9:19 am CST, Update by The Master
LinuxWorld.com.au has an article up on what's due to be included in Linux kernel 2.6.12. The high points include:
- Trusted computing hooks
- SELinux (security enhanced linux specs)
- Address space randomization for defence against buffer overflow attacks
- Multipath I/O (a spec for redundant/load balanced I/O)
- Native virtualization support with Xen
- Reiser4 filesystem
- Clustering and embedded systems improvements, including state suspension to disk or memory
- iNotify file change and kernel filesystem change notification systems for desktop applications
A.T. Hun comments: All of this is cool and all, but I really wish that Linus and the boys would cut a 2.7 branch so that development could continue there and 2.6 could stabilize. It is very annoying to upgrade your kernel for a security fix, only to find that some new "feature" is causing things to bork up.
The Master comments: That's been a common complaint for the 2.6 branch of the kernel. Unfortunately, it appears the kernel maintainers believe this is the way to go. The 2.2 and 2.4 trees had the advantage of several maintainers that were willing to maintain their own trees, and stabilize them for production use. This doesn't seem to be the case with 2.6, since the current kernel development pattern seems to be the preference of Linus and Andrew.
Steve Jobs--Egomaniac -- 8:49 am CST, Update by The Master
Slashdot has posted an article about Publisher Wiley's Books Pulled from Apple Stores after Wiley put out an unauthorized biography of Steve Jobs. While I have not read said biography, I doubt that this would be a reason to pull every Wiley book from Apple stores. However, Steve has always been an egomaniac and control freak, so I'm sure his knee-jerk reaction is acceptable to him. It will be interesting to see the fallout from this one.
