IBM/Sony to Open Cell is reporting that IBM and Sony have plans to open up their new Cell processor which will be used to power the PS3. They are going to "release full chip specifications and software libraries" to try to enlist open source programmers to work on the chip. I've already been hearing about work on getting Cell support in the Linux kernel. I think there's a couple of points to note here:

  1. It's a pretty smart move by IBM and shows just how committed they are to the open source movement.
  2. It may end up providing some "proof" that encouraging open source participation can be good for a company's bottom line.
  3. It's another tweak to Microsoft and, by extension, the Xbox 360.

Interesting times we live in.

DOOM3 1.3 Patch Released

id has released the 1.3 patch for DOOM3 in Windows and Linux. Amongst other things, this allows Linux users to play the Resurrection of Evil expansion pack! Huzzah! There's even an updated SDK available for you mod-makers out there. You can get the patches and SDK from your favorite software repository or better yet use id's BitTorrent trackers which downloaded it lightning-fast for me. id's Timothee "TTimo" Besset has all of the gory details in his .plan.
