Pondering the Imponderable

I was ever so rudely awakened this morning at 3:30 by my UPS beeping at me. Some idiot plowed into a telephone pole and knocked out everyone's power in Oconto Falls. I've been fighting some bug since Sunday afternoon (a problem which was not helped by going to Lambeau Field) and had a hard time getting to sleep last night. Of course, once I was up and awake, I had an even harder time getting back to sleep. I can't imagine what it's going to cost the guy who hit the pole for all the repairs.

NFL Week #14 Final

How right I was! I thought things seemed too easy and Eeyore took a commanding lead. I really can't believe I dropped all three games that we had different. Amazing. I was 11-5 while Eeyore was 14-2. Year-to-date that makes me 140-68 (.673) while she is 143-65 (.688). Can I catch up in the remaining three weeks? Can Eeyore maintain this kind of quality? Will her pact with Satan run out? Stay tuned!

The good news is that my fantasy team won in the first round of the playoffs so I'm going to make a little money this year anyway. I like my chances against the team I'm playing for our conference semi-finals next weekend. My wife and I managed to survive multiple hours outdoors in NE Wisconsin at the Packers-Lions "game" on Sunday night. It was a good experience. My Lions both choked violently and were robbed by the refs so I had the complete experience. The fans near me were very friendly. I had a ski mask on to keep warm. I noticed after the final FG to win it for the Packers they were addressing me somewhat cautiously. I must've had fire shooting out of my eyes.

The Master comments: To add to the pain, Eeyore had no statistics or online references when she made her picks Sunday morning. We were visiting her parents so we didn't have instant access internet available. I was impressed when the final tally came in :-)

Linksys WRT54G v5 1.00.4 Firmware

If you've got a Linksys WRT54G v5 wireless router, make sure that you download the 1.00.4 firmware. I thought I was having some problems with EZ-Net. ESPN.com was especially slow in loading with my Insider content on the sidebar. Now it loads lightning quick. I initially blamed the router, but couldn't figure out what the problem might be. Make sure that you have the v5 revision since there's a bunch of revisions under the WRT54G name.

Torvalds: Use KDE

Linus Torvalds busted out the whooping stick on Gnome, telling them that he urges users to use KDE because Gnome has been designed by "interface nazis". I couldn't agree more with his assessment. The Gnome team seems to think that their way of doing things is the simplest and most elegant, to the point that they make it impossible to do it any other way. I cringe every time I have to save a file in Firefox because it insists on pulling up the God-awful Gnome file manager dialog. It is distracting enough that I've seriously considered just using Konqueror. Thanks Slashdot.

UT2K4 3369.1 Linux and Mac Patch Released

icculus has released the 3369-1 patch for the Linux and Mac versions of Unreal Tournament 2004. This fixes a couple of outstanding bugs, most notably a memory issue in Linux that I believe was causing me some serious stability problems. I hope this fixes it. I've been playing again now that the 3369 patch is out.
