Bleh: Javascript

I spent the last 4 days working off-and-on on a project to move an old Windows-based application to an intranet-based web app. While I am very surprised at how well things have gone so far, I have learned more about Javascript and AJAX than I ever planned to. And I have to say, while this stuff is very cool, the massive differences between IE and Firefox are going to drive me mad.

NVIDIA Unveils Quad SLI

At CES 2006 Dell and NVIDIA have revealed the quad SLI setup. That's right: not one, not two, not three, but FOUR graphics cards. While this is clearly extremely cool, what is not clear is how you would actually cool this or how to convince the power company to build a substation at your house to provide you with enough juice. Wonder what kind of GLQuake framerate you'd get with that bad-boy :)

The Master comments: I have this picture of starting GLQ, hearing a loud electric whirring noise, and watching the lights dim until the transformer down the block blows. Wheee!

Xbox 360 to Get HD-DVD

The rumor has been floating around. It has been repeated and then denied. Now Bill Gates himself confirms it. The Xbox 360 will get an external HD-DVD drive this year. Here's the scoop:

Building on Xbox 360 leadership in high-definition experiences, the company announced plans to deliver a new Xbox 360 external HD DVD drive in 2006. The new drive will offer millions of Xbox 360 owners the ability to easily enjoy HD DVD movies and will provide consumers with even more choices for experiencing high-definition content, in either physical or digital form.

Now game designers will have to decide if they want to appeal to a subset of the Xbox 360 crowd and use HD-DVD technology. Here's my guess: precious few will really use it until the end of the product's life-cycle, at which point it will be moot because a new Xbox will be on the way. There's only one reason for this: to poke Sony in the eye. My guess is that the HD-DVD drive will not actually appear in 2006 either, but this announcement will just serve to affect the PS3. It will be interesting to see if there will be any HD-DVD or Blu-Ray movies available by the time either console can support them. Classic BillG, classic MS. Thanks Slashdot.
