Next Gen Gaming Arrives at the Hun House

Well, I just made the plunge into next-gen gaming. We're pooling Christmas money together to get a Playstation 3. I took advantage of this deal on Wal-Mart.com, offering a 60G PS3, Blu-Ray remote, and a game (I picked Resistance: Fall of Man) for $499. I also added Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction to the mix. Now I've got to figure out how to set up a server on my box so I can stream MP3s to the PS3. Naturally, I'll also be trying to run Linux on it.

The 60G PS3 has the hardware backwards compatibility and the full compliment of USB ports and card readers. The backwards compatibility became a big issue when we found out that our favorite PS2 games (the Ratchet and Clank series) play like crap via software emulation. Since no more 60G PS3s are being made and Wal-Mart was offering that deal, we decided we'd better strike lest they run out after the post-Thanksgiving-Day rush.

Update 11/6 According to UPS, the PS3 will be here tomorrow! Unfortunately, neither of the games likely will be. That'll just give me some time to work through getting things working with my wireless network, downloading updates, etc. Thankfully I found out that my PS2's S-Video cord will work with the PS3, so that's one less thing I'll have to buy. We're holding off getting a second controller until the rumble-equipped ones come out next year.

Beyond3D on MegaTexture

Beyond3D has posted a technical overview article on MegaTexture in Quake Wars. This covers how the MegaTexture engine in id Tech 4 works, and has screenshots of the various features and artifacts. While this isn't a Carmack Finger post in migraine factor, it comes close. Enjoy.
