Make Something Unreal: Assault Winners

Make Something Unreal has announced the Assault map winners. This us the category I had been waiting for. The winners are:Thanks Voodoo Extreme.

Red Hat 6.2 Soon

Slashdot is reporting that the popular Linux distribution, Red Hat, (the official Linux distro of The Haus) is about to release version 6.2. In the comments it is noted that Xfree86 4.0 will not be included.
We're not including XFree86 4.0 because it's not ready. It doesn't compile at all on sparc (we're currently working on fixing this), doesn't compile out of the box on alpha (we've already fixed that), doesn't have all the drivers 3.3.x used to have (fixing that is a LOT of work), it doesn't have a working configuration tool yet (XFree86 -configure is a start, but it won't let you configure international keyboards and such), and there are a bit too many bugs for a stable release even in the drivers that are there.
Look for it at your favorite mirror site soon.

Which SoF is Right for You?

Raven's Kenn Hoekstra updated his .plan with the way to figure out which version of Soldier of Fortune you are buying: the regular version or the reduced-violence "Tactical Version." Personally, I think it's smart that they are doing two versions. Hopefully it will keep some folks (who shall remain nameless) off their backs.

More SoF Timings

Raven's John Scott updated his .plan with word that he has added more video card timings for Soldier of Fortune. This time around he used a new demo on a different machine.

AMD Spitfire Pricing

According to this Register article AMD's "Spitfire" processor (an Athlon with on-die cache a la Intel's Celeron) will be formally announced on April 24. This much is for sure--they will be dirt cheap. The only question is whether or not there will be any Slot A motherboards out there to put them in! Thanks Shugashack.

NHL 2000 Roster Update

EA Sports has posted the post-trading-deadline roster update on their NHL 2000 page. I thought about this last week, but it slipped my mind until the good folks at Gone Gold reminded me of it this morning. Guess I am getting old.

In other hockey-related news, the Stanley Cup playoffs are almost here. Here's hoping that my beloved Red Wings can win it all ! Let's go Wings!

My wife and I got tickets to the Junior A national tournament which is being held in Green Bay, WI, this year. The best part of all? Mr. Hockey himself, Gordie Howe, will be there! I'm going to have him sign my Red Wings jersey (which has his name and #9 on it) and then frame it.

Pondering the Imponderable

Half-Life is proving to be even more than I thought it would be. It's quite a game. I know, most people knew that a year and a half ago. My only gripe is that the decals (burn marks, blood splatters, etc.) keep flashing all the time, and no amount of tweaking gl_polyoffset seems to be helping. If anyone managed to cure that on a TNT please let me know.

There will be some cool new things announced on The Haus this coming week, including a new commentary for map reviews, hopefully an update to a column that hasn't been updated in a bit *cough*, and some other cool things you'll just have to wait to find out. Stay tuned! It's going to be interesting . . .

Aureal RIP?

This press release reports that Aureal appears to be dead or at least in critical condition. Here's the pertinent bits:
Aureal Inc. (OTC Bulletin Board: AURL), a leader in digital audio imaging, today announced the resignation of all of its executive officers, including its President and CEO, Kip Kokinakis, its Chief Technical Officer, Scott Foster, its Chief Financial Officer, David Domeier, and its Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel, Brendan O'Flaherty, along with all senior staff members of Aureal. The Board of Aureal stated that it is seeking replacement or turnaround management and is considering all necessary actions to either sell the Company or its assets or wind down the Company.
Wow! I don't remember even hearing of whispers about this. Even if they manage to sell the company, what OEM is going to want to buy technology from a company in a situation like this? Thanks Shugashack.

More Obi-Wan Shots

A new site called Obi-WanKenobi.net has opened up today. They have scored two new screenshots from LucasArt's Episode I: Obi-Wan. Go check them out!
