64M MiniJam for $199

Normally I loathe linking to Amazon.com, but VisorCentral noticed that they dropped the price on the 64M MiniJam $60 to $199. The MiniJam is an MP3 player Springboard module for the Handspring Visor. The thought of an MP3 player Springboard was one of the reasons I got the Visor over a Palm. At $199, it becomes a bit more feasible.

Linux Industry to Call it Quits

In view of recent statements from a Microsoft executive that "there isn't much value" in Linux, Linux-related industries will shut down. Why compete without M$'s blessing? Thanks Slashdot.

In case you are a little slow, make sure you note the name of the site reporting this.

ICQ Crackers

ZDNet is reporting about a group of Ukrainians who created some software to crack ICQ, including potentially stealing others' UINs. Maybe AOL should make the software more secure instead of just threatening lawsuits. Thanks sCary.

Designing the Q3:TA Intro

id's Fred Nilsson made his first-ever .plan update, giving a behind-the-scenes look into the making of the new Quake III: Team Arena opening movie. It's interesting to see how it went from rough sketches to the final product.

Red Hat 7.1 Beta

Red Hat has posted a beta 7.1 version of their popular Linux distribution. 7.1 defaults to the 2.4 kernel and includes KDE 2.0. Hopefully they cleared up the compiler and glibc problems too. You can get the ISO at your favorite mirror site in the /pub/beta/fisher directory. Thanks Slashdot.

UPDATE! Linux Today has the official Red Hat press release.

New (Last?) 3dfx Drivers

I saw on a number of sites that the x-3dfx team (former 3dfx employees) have released a new version of the drivers for 3dfx cards. Expect no support. This is quite likely the last 3dfx driver revision we'll see.

Q3:TA FAQ Update

Blue is reporting that the Quake III: Team Arena FAQ has been updated. It adds information on why it is not a good idea to play mpterra2, mpterra3, or mpq3tourney6 with bots.
