GPL == Scared? -- 11:44 pm CST, Update by A.T. Hun
Evan Leibovitch wonders aloud if the GPL exists not so much for freedom, but more out of fear, namely the fear that your code will become a part of a closed source project. BSD fans could care less and are happy if their stuff gets used that way. Personally, I think this fear--the fear of closed source software--is the only reason the GPL is as popular as it is. Thanks Linux Today.Episode I on DVD -- 11:41 pm CST, Update by A.T. Hun

I've been reading all the comments in the Microsoft vs. the GPL "debate". As I read, I come to one inescapable conclusion: Neither Side Gets It. Read my take on the situation, along with some (semi-) friendly advice for both sides.MS Uses Open Source -- 9:57 am CST, Update by A.T. Hun
The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Microsoft is making use of open-source software. Some Hotmail functions are still using FreeBSD servers, and *BSD code is being used in Windows' TCP stack. This is perfectly legal, given the BSD license. Which pretty much proves that MS's main gripe with the GPL is that it doesn't allow them to steal code like the BSD license does. Thanks Slashdot.J.t.Qbe comments: Technically Microsoft isn't stealing the BSD source, because the BSD license permits anyone to use the code--even Microsoft. This does make M$ hypocritical, though: it paints all open source software as evil, while itself using BSD software to make money. Hmmm, Microsoft being hypocritical--who'd'a guessed that'd ever happen?
Detonator 6.50 vs. 12.41 -- 9:50 am CST, Update by A.T. Hun
RIVA Station has posted a comparison of NVIDIA's official 6.50 and 12.41 Detonator drivers. 6.50 keeps up or is even slightly faster (in 16 bit) than 12.41 in OpenGL. 12.41 shows some nice improvements in DirectX 7.x and 8.x. One caveat, the 12.41s no longer support the TNT family. Of course, I haven't found a driver better than 5.22 for my TNT2 Ultra. Thanks Blue's News.GCC 3.0 Released (Finally) -- 9:43 am CST, Update by A.T. Hun
After what seemed like an eternity GCC 3.0 has been released. GCC is the GNU Compiler Collection, open source tools for compiling C, C++, Java, Fortran, and other languages. Hopefully this means that Red Hat's version of GCC with its accompanying headaches can be put to bed for good. Having said that, I'm a firm believer that Red Hat's action forced the GCC team to get off their rears and finish 3.0. Thanks Slashdot.Recent Headlines
