HP/Compaq Deal Falling Apart? -- 3:44 pm CST, Update by A.T. Hun

News.Com is reporting that the Hewlett family is opposing the merger of Hewlett-Packard and Compaq. The family doesn't have enough votes to single-handedly kill the deal, but they will have plenty of influence on a decision that has come under a lot of scrutiny. This merger didn't make sense to me from day one and it still doesn't. All it seems to accomplish is eliminating an awful lot of jobs. Thanks Ars Technica.

Don't Upgrade WinXP Home! -- 9:21 am CST, Update by A.T. Hun

Microsoft has released this security bulletin indicating that data loss is likely to occur if you try to reinstall, repair, or upgrade WinXP Home. It seems this only applies if XP was preinstalled on the machine. I love the resolution step:

To resolve this problem, restore the missing data and program shortcuts from a backup.

Oh, gee, thanks.

Vanquished! -- 8:41 pm CST, Update by A.T. Hun

My 36th level druid finished Diablo II and the Lord of Destruction expansion back tonight by beating Baal into bite-sized morsels. Now I have to decide if I want to keep going in Nightmare mode or work on a different character.

I bought the game on October 1 and finished it on November 11. That's a lot of playing, especially when you consider that I was gone for at least a week of that. I think that's the fastest I've ever completed any game--at least any game of this length. Totally addictive.

J.t.Qbe comments: Yow, A.T., have you done anything else? I'm still in Act II, though I've been a little busy over the past week. I suspect that my Diablo II time is going to be cut short with this week's release of Wizardry 8 and this week's Civ III sale at Best Buy. So many games, so little time. You know, though, a new baby can actually add to your gaming time. "No problem dear, I'll get up and hold the baby. Really, I don't mind!"

NFL Week #9 So Far -- 8:38 pm CST, Update by A.T. Hun

With a primetime game and a half left, Eeyore and I are tied at 9-4. Not at all bad. It will be even nicer if the Raiders and Ravens win as expected. My Lions are finding more heartbreaking ways to lose. I'd hate to try to put that mess of a locker room back together again.
