CS:CZ Preview

Ferrango has posted a brief preview of Gearbox's forthcoming Counter-Strike: Condition Zero. I've tried to like CS. I really have. I just can't get into it. I don't like the idea of dying and then waiting forever while the remaining team members sneak around. I like to get in there--guns a-blazin'. To each their own. My big concern with CS:CZ is that it is still based on the Half-Life engine which is a modified Quake 2 engine. That's more than a little long in the tooth. It certainly won't compare graphically with other FPSs that will be released this year. Thanks Evil Avatar.

UD in Linux

Now that I've been running the United Devices client again (see our Team Haus page for more information), I decided to try it in Linux today using the 20010626-4 version of Codeweavers WINE. I use an older version because the latest version causes Quicken to crash quite easily for me. At any rate, all I had to do was mount my Windows drive, go to the United Devices directory, and run wine ud.exe. The only problem I've encountered so far is that it doesn't seem to be running in a low priority because it wants all the CPU no matter what. I also don't know how it will react when it tries to get information from and send information to the server. If it works, there's one less reason to run Windows! That's always a Good Thing.

System Update

I haven't been able to do much with my computer today because I've got the Martian Death Cold or whatever's going around here. Nevertheless, I am quite happy with the way it is working now. After fixing my IRQ conflict (story), I found the last major source of instability. Surprisingly, it was the ALi hardware monitor! For some insane reason it would suddenly read that my CPU temperature was 255C and the core voltage was 4.5. When that happened, everything would lock. Since I stopped running it, my system has been a lot more stable. Very strange.

Comdex Registration

My Comdex registration badge and information came in the mail today. It even says, "Content Director: TheHaus.Net" on it. I'll be driving down to Chicago and spending the day there on March 5. It should be interesting. I hope to hit a brewpub or two while I'm down there too. A man's got to have his priorities . . .
