Pondering the Imponderable -- 10:57 pm CST, Update by A.T. Hun
I think Epic should have just called UT2K4's Onslaught mode "Crack mode." I can't stop playing. I fear my productivity is going to dip dramatically for a while.
J.t.Qbe comments: That's possible?
A.T. Hun comments: This from a man who hasn't updated his commentary in almost four years :)
Complete UT2K4 Manual in Demo -- 11:45 am CST, Update by A.T. Hun
If you look in the Help directory wherever you installed the Unreal Tournament 2004 demo, you will find a file called Manual.pdf. This file contains the complete UT2K4 manual. It's a little something to tide you over until the full version is out. It's also nice if you need a little help learning the vehicles. BTW, I put in an order for the DVD version at EBGames (once again, no affiliation). I hope they don't change the price. It would be hard for them to miss this one since it is advertised for that price on their front page.

A Valentine's Day Poem for Geeks -- 4:38 pm CST, Update by A.T. Hun
I saw this on Slashdot so I just knew that I had to reprint it here (with one very minor correction) for the greater good of all geek-kind as Valentine's Day approaches:
r0535 @r3 r3d
v1013t5 @re b1u3
@11 my b@53
@r3 b310ng t0 y0u
And there's even a more geeky version (yes, 'tis true!) for the turbo-geek in your life. Once again, I had to make a minor edit. I'm really scared that I knew what to change.

UT2K4 Demo First Impressions -- 11:23 am CST, Update by A.T. Hun
I just got done playing a bit of the UT2K4 demo in Linux. Actually, I just fired up an Onslaught and Assault server and ran around it alone. Those new gametypes seem very cool. The vehicles are a nice addition. It just takes a bit to get used to steering them. The new features in Assault make it much easier for those unfamiliar with the maps to figure out what's going on. Too bad I have so much work to do today . . .
Hey TM! Get this one downloaded!
Oh, by the way, EBGames (no affiliation, yadda, yadda) has the DVD version for pre-order for $39.99. I don't care that much about the extra DVD stuff, but to be able to install the game from one disc instead of six is a good idea in my book :)
Pondering the Imponderable -- 9:44 am CST, Update by A.T. Hun
My wife and I took out cellular provider up on a special they were running and got a new phone, a Kyocera Phantom (KE414). Our old one still worked OK, but the battery life was running down and this new one has some features we wanted. Basically it came down to a choice of getting a new phone for free or buying a new battery for the old one for $40.
All About ALSA -- 9:04 am CST, Update by A.T. Hun
Linux Journal gives a general overview of ALSA, the Advanced Linux Sound Architecture. ALSA has been around for a while, but starting in the 2.6.x kernels, ALSA replaces the Open Sound System (OSS) as the default audio API for Linux. The article does a good job of giving a summary of ALSA's capabilities and why you should care.
I've gotten it working with a SoundBlaster Live! in my kids' box (it worked out-of-the-box with Slackware 9.1) and a SoundBlaster Audigy in my main box (I got it working with the 2.6 kernel). The nice thing is that ALSA allows me to use wavetable MIDI synthesis so now I don't have to use Timidity anymore. Unfortunately, Creative still hasn't given them the specs to support EAX. Thanks Linux Today.
UT2K4 Linux and Mac Demo Released -- 8:22 am CST, Update by A.T. Hun
Ryan "icculus" Gordon announces the release of the Linux and Mac OSX versions of the Unreal Tournament 2004 demo. w00t! Go icculus! The bad thing is that I have work to do today . . . Ahh, I'm sure I can squeeze some UT2K4 time in.
