Benchmarking DOOM3

HardOCP went to id Software and did some preliminary DOOM3 benchmarking with ATI and NVIDIA reps present. While the article mainly focuses on the latest and greatest hardware, there are a few encouraging words for us poor slobs with no money to upgrade:

For those of you that think you are not going to have the hardware that you need to play DOOM 3, the fact of the matter is that many of you will be just fine, although an upgrade may still be in your future. As of this afternoon we were playing DOOM 3 on a 1.5GHz Pentium 4 box with a GeForce 4 MX440 video card and having a surprisingly good gaming experience. Even a subtle jump to an AMD 2500+ with a GeForce 3 video card that is two years old will deliver a solid gaming experience that will let you enjoy the game the way id Software designed it to be. That fact alone should let many of you know that you will not be left behind in experiencing DOOM 3.

. . .

id Software has done a great job of bringing DOOM 3 playability to the masses, probably including a larger portion of the gamers out there than has ever been done with a cutting edge gaming title. If you would have told me a year ago that I could play DOOM 3 on a GeForce 3 64MB video card and 1.8GHz AthlonXP and have a good gaming experience, I would have called you crazy, but that is exactly what we are seeing.

TM, there may be hope after all.

The Master comments: Only as long as SSE2 is not required, since my Pentium-III doesn't implement that. I'm hoping that it does though. Otherwise it's probably going to be a while before I can afford to upgrade the minimal amount of system to play.

SCOX Takes Loss #1

Well, except for one point, SCO loses the DaimlerChrysler case. You may hoist your drink of choice now. I can't wait for them to lose in either the Novell or the IBM case. I look forward to that day.

Update (4:14pm): It appears that SCO's spin machine has been engaged. They still get to suck it down. Heh.

A.T. Hun comments: I had heard rumors (on Groklaw, I believe) that D-C's lawyers laughed themselves silly when they received the suit. Now we know why. Hopefully, this is officially the beginning of the end, although I'm sure that the death throes will be rather prolonged. At any rate, SCO is currently below their previous 52 week low.
