Silliest . . . Mod . . . Ever

I'm not sure, but I'm quite certain that this could be the silliest mod ever. It's so silly, that I may have to download it and try it out myself.

DOOM3 1.1.1286 Linux Binaries

id's Timothee "TTimo" Besset updated his .plan with news that there are new binaries available that include ALSA/multichannel sound support. Here's the word:

No GUI changes were made in order to remain compatible with the first release, you will need to set some cvars on the command line to configure your sound:

set s_driver to best, alsa or oss. (best will just try alsa and fallback to OSS otherwise )
set s_numberOfSpeakers to 2 for stereo, 6 for multichannel sound ( whatever your actual number of speakers may be ).

For instance:
doom3 +set s_driver alsa +set s_numberOfSpeakers 6
will start doom3 using the Alsa sound backend in multichannel mode

I'm helping seed the BitTorrent right now, so get downloading!

Single Window in Firefox

I just found a neat trick in Firefox to force sites that insist on opening links in new windows to open them in new tabs instead. First type about:config into the address bar. Look for browser.tabs.showSingleWindowModePrefs (type Single into the filter to make it easier) and change it to true. Then under Tools->Options->Advanced (or Edit->Preferences->Advanced in the GTK version) look for Tabbed Browsing. Check the box marked Force links that open new windows to open in: and choose the a new tab radio button.

While you are at it, check out the official Firefox keyboard shortcuts page for more fun tricks. I use Ctrl-PgUp/PgDn all the time to navigate between tabs.

Half-Life 2 Update

Steam News has word of an update for Half-Life 2 to fix some sound stuttering problems and some other goodies. Here's the news:

This update will fix sound stuttering that users were experiencing that would last for longer than a few seconds during normal gameplay. This update will also eliminate this same behavior following a quicksave or autosave. There will still be a short pause while the autosave happens, but not the more drawn out stuttering behavior.

We are still investigating another performance problem on some hardware, which will manifest where the game is getting into a state where performance drops to less than 5 fps and does not recover or crashes.

Next week we will be releasing the Source SDK, along with a surprise for the community.

Thanks Blue's News.

In a related story, I noticed that GoGamer has Half-Life 2 for $34.90 and the Collector's Edition for $59.90. No affiliation, yadda, yadda.

Update! Not that you probably care, but I just ordered Half-Life 2. Now I just have to wait for it to get here and for Cedega 4.2 to be released to support it.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving to all who are celebrating today. We Americans certainly have a lot to be thankful for (although we aren't always that good at being thankful). I plan on eating near-lethal doses of turkey and trying to keep my sanity during the Lions game. Special thanks to The Master and J.t.Qbe for their work on the site, to all of our visitors (both of you), and to my family for putting up with me.
