Pondering the Imponderable

Well, I sure did enjoy my night of not playing Half-Life 2. I hope Transgaming or someone comes up with a fix quickly. Right now, I just have five very expensive coasters and a piece of paper Valve tried to pass off as a manual. The box sure looks nice though.

EA Buys Exclusive Rights from NFL

Electronic Arts has managed to buy exclusive rights to the NFL players, stadiums, teams, etc. for video games. This is going to be a crushing blow to ESPN's NFL franchise. I can't really understand why the NFL would do this. It's not like EA spices up Madden every year with enough new stuff to justify forking over $49. How will that change when there is no pressure to innovate (other than the massive amount of cash this must have cost)?

Update! This Game Over column indicates that EA paid over $300 million for this five-year agreement. They would have to sell 1.2 million copies each of those five years (assuming they are getting the full $49, which they are not) just to break even on the licensing alone. Craziness. Thanks Evil Avatar for that link.

NFL Week #14 Final

After last night's barn-burner (that was a great game--I hope somebody else watched it!), Eeyore and I ended up tied for the weekend at 13-3. Year-to-date that makes me 135-73 (.649) while Eeyore is 131-77 (.630). Let the good times roll! With the points my fantasy team tacked on last night, not only did I throttle the team I was playing, but I would've beaten any other team in the league! Of course you know what that means. I'm going to get crushed this weekend. It's fun while it's lasting, anyway.

New Steam Update

Valve has released a new update for Steam which is supposed to speed up loading times among other fixes. Unfortunately it also adds a major problem, at least if you are using Cedega like I am. After Steam automatically updated itself, it crashes everytime I try to enter my password. Hooray for progress! Here's a discussion of the problem on Transgaming's forums. Thanks Blue's News, I think.

NFL Week #14 So Far

With one game to go, Eeyore leads me by one game 13-2 to 12-3. Pretty spiffy. I'm ticked because my Lions choked away a double-digit lead to lose to the Green Bay Satanists Packers. However, my Fightin' Wombats won in the first round of the playoffs against the second-place team in our league! It was payback time because that team did the same thing to my Wombats last year when the situation was reversed. Not only do I get to advance, but I am guaranteed enough money to at least cover my entry fee. Actually, my team played so well that I would have beaten every other team in the playoffs . . . and I still have two players who are in tonight's contest!
