Ion Storm Deceased

The word has come via Gamespot that Eidos has announced that Ion Storm Austin has been closed. With this closure the whole operation that was once known as Ion Storm has been terminated. What a sad end for a grand dream.

I'm 37, I'm Not Old

The headline for this article is the peasant's complaint in Monty Python's The Holy Grail when called "old" (and "old woman" for that matter). Today I officially reach "not old" status. I probably won't worry unless someone calls me "old woman" from behind.

It's probably appropriate that on my Monty Python desk calendar they are beginning the infamous "Dead Parrot" sketch today. "This Hun is no more. He has ceased to be. He's expired and gone to meet his maker."

J.t.Qbe comments: Happy birthday, geezer. Be sure to take some time today to remember the days when you were young and your father used to take you to the stadium on spring afternoons. The sun was shining, the warm breeze was blowing, the crowd was waving pennants and shouting...."Hail Caesar!"

Judge Slams SCO

U.S. Federal Judge Dale Kimball had some very sharp words for SCO about their case versus IBM or, more appropriately, their lack thereof. Here are couple of juicy tidbits:

"Viewed against the backdrop of SCO's plethora of public statements concerning IBM's and others' infringement of SCO's purported copyrights to the UNIX software, it is astonishing that SCO has not offered any competent evidence to create a disputed fact regarding whether IBM has infringed SCO's alleged copyrights through IBM's Linux activities. Further SCO, in its briefing, chose to cavalierly ignore IBM's claims that SCO could not create a disputed fact regarding whether it even owned the relevant copyrights.

"Nevertheless, despite the vast disparity between SCO's public accusations and its actual evidence -- or complete lack thereof -- and the resulting temptation to grant IBM's motion, the court has determined that it would be premature to grant summary judgment on IBM's Tenth Counterclaim."

In other words, "SCO, you sure talk a lot, but you haven't proven a thing." It's nice to see the legal system doing its job. Thanks Slashdot.

IGN Buys 3D Gamers

IGN/Gamespy announced that they have acquired 3D Gamers. Sigh. I'm sure they will be assimilated into the vortex of crap that is FilePlanet. There won't be any place decent to download patches or demos soon.

Fiorina Out at HP

Call me a prophet. Back when the HP/Compaq merger was approved I said "I've a feeling that history will show this merger to be about as successful as the Time-Warner/AOL merger" and "one day we'll all look back on this and laugh." Today, evidently, is that day. HP CEO Carly Fiorina was forced out, mainly because the merger that she championed didn't bring the quick success she promised. Surprise, surprise.

J.t.Qbe comments: Ding dong, the... er, maybe not. Adding to the good news coming from HP, development of OpenVMS is actively continuing and a new version will be released in the near future. I can't remember where I read it. Sorry.

DOOM3: RoE and Xbox April 4

Activision and id have announced that the DOOM3 expansion, Resurrection of Evil, and DOOM3 for the Xbox will be released on April 4. id usually just says, "When it's done," but there ya go.
