Modern Pinball Firefox Theme -- 10:24 am CST, Update by A.T. Hun

I just discovered an new theme for Firefox that I really like: Modern Pinball. It is based on the Pinball theme that I've known and loved until recently. Later versions of Pinball had major problems with Firefox in Linux. Modern Pinball solves all of those problems and even includes proper icons for the Preferences/Options menu. Check it out. The author is working on a version of the theme for Thunderbird, which would be very cool.

Slackware 10.2 Ponderings -- 5:13 pm CST, Update by A.T. Hun

Here's a couple things I've noticed about Slackware 10.2 already.

1. The supplied 2.6 kernel works great. I just wish they'd add an option to the installer so that the kernel modules, 2.6.x ALSA, and kernel source would automatically be installed if you choose that kernel. I know it's technically only a "test" kernel, but still. Nevertheless, it's nice not to have to compile a new kernel immediately.
2. Pat moved the permissions for udev from the permissions.d directory and made them a part of the udev.rules file. No biggie, but I had to look at the old changelog to see what had happened. The only reason I need to edit permissions is so that I can sync my PDA without being root.
3. This isn't Slackware-specific, but it bears mentioning. Before you dust your box, make sure you have a recent backup of /etc. You'll thank me later. It's also a good idea to back up anything critical in your /home directory in case you accidentally rm -rf something important. I did that once about a year ago. The only thing that would've made me feel worse is if I hadn't just made a backup.

I've spent the last week working on a custom application server based on UNIX and Windows socket processing. For the record: socket programming SUCKS in interoperating environments. I can't even imagine how much BS game developers have to go through to make this stuff work in multiplatform.

Thank goodness I'm almost done with this project. My head hurts.

Firefox 1.0.7 Released -- 3:37 pm CST, Update by A.T. Hun

The Mozilla team has released Firefox 1.0.7. This new version fixes the international domain name link buffer overflow vulnerability and the Linux command line URL parsing flaw. All Firefox users should upgrade as soon as possible. I know I have.
