Goodbye Symantec -- 10:51 am CST, Update by The Master

Well, I finally bailed out of the Symantec Antivirus rowboat, and switched to Trend Micro. I was sick and tired of their extremely high prices for little returned value, and with 2 PCs that need AV protection, I wasn't going to pay for the Norton/Symantec name or their terrible tech support anymore.

While I have been fairly pleased with Trend Micro so far, the Firewall portion of the package seems to be kind of flaky. I don't know if that's because of my prior installation of Symantec, or what, but hopefully I'll have that issue worked out shortly.

KMyMoney -- 11:42 am CST, Update by A.T. Hun

There is only one Windows program that I have not found an adequate Linux replacement for yet: Quicken. That keeps me tied to my kids' Windows box. That worries me because that information is way too vulnerable in Win98 (not only to hackers but also to my kids). Gnucash is way too convoluted and user-unfriendly. At last I seem to have found a replacement: KMyMoney. As its name implies, it's a KDE app. While it's not a Quicken clone per se, Quicken users should feel right at home. It can import QIF files, but I decided to start from scratch at the beginning of the new year. I'm going to run both KMyMoney and Quicken concurrently for a month or so to make sure that KMyMoney is all it seems to be. It seems like I'm very close to divorcing myself from Windows entirely!
