- 1792: Kentucky became the 15th state in the Union.
- 1796: Tennessee became the 16th state in the Union.
- 1880: The first US public telephone box went into service. It was installed by the Connecticut Telephone Co. in their office at Yale Bank Building in New Haven.
- 1941: British forces were withdrawn from Crete with heavy losses. Almost 3,000 Australians were also lost in the evacuation.
- 1943: A civilian flight from Lisbon to London was shot down by the Germans during World War II, killing all aboard, including actor Leslie Howard.
- 1958: Charles de Gaulle became Premier of France.
- 1980: CNN made its debut.
- 1996: Ukraine became a nuclear weapons-free nation with the transfer of the last of its warheads to Russia.
