Finally! Non-Ugly Fonts

I finally figured out how to change the default "Sans" and "Sans Serif" fonts in Mandrake 9.1 (using fontconfig 2.x). Apparently it reads /etc/fonts/fonts.conf for this information. What I did was look for this comment in that file:

Provide required aliases for standard names

Under each section for serif, sans serif, and monospace, move the font name that you want as the default to the top of the list. By default, Mandrake 9.1 uses Nimbus Roman No9 L as its default serif font which is ugly as sin itself in italics, making sites like Slashdot nearly unreadable. All is better with the world now . . .
