Testing Mozilla 1.8a5

Well, I thought I was going to get away from using alpha software again, but here I am. I used Mozilla 1.7.5 for about one day before getting tired of functionality lost from Firefox 1.0 and Thunderbird 1.0. Thus, I've been giving Mozilla 1.8a5 a spin. The 1.8 Gecko (the Mozilla rendering engine) branch will be the basis for Firefox 1.1 and Thunderbird 1.1. I've been pretty happy with it. It has crashed a couple of times on me for no particular reason. I like having the tight integration between mail and browser again. The browser has some rendering fixes that are quite nice. The "Slashdot bug" is gone. ESPN.com renders better, but is slower. The UI isn't as slick as for the standalone apps, but Mozilla veterans won't have any issues. All told, I'm happy enough with it to not go back to the separate apps. 1.8a6 should be out relatively early in January with 1.8 beta coming in early February so stay tuned.
