Pondering the Imponderable

Sometimes you just have to learn the hard way. For some reason, my box locked up tonight. Not sure what happened, but I have my suspicions. "No problem!" I thought. I'm using a journalling filesystem, ext3, so I can just cold boot and be back in no time. Well, I found out that when I redid my kernel config from scratch I compiled ext3 as a module instead of making it a part of the kernel. As a result, the root partition had to be loaded as ext2. So when I rebooted, I had to go through a lengthy fsck session. Sigh. Well, I'm fixing that problem now. It makes sense (after all, how can you use a module that's on a partition that is not yet mounted), but I just wish I would have figured that out ahead of time.
