Stupid Linux Tricks

Well, I found out why UT2K4 and the Quake IV demo were so flaky on my system. Somehow or another when I upgraded to Slackware 10.2 either the installer didn't put a line for the swap partition in my fstab (unlikely) or I accidentally erased it (quite likely). So these programs were trying to run with no swap space on the hard drive at all. My 512M of memory got me through most tasks without a problem, but as soon as things got tight, the disk started thrashing and the out of memory killer in the kernel did its job and killed the process dead. Actually, I'm very surprised that things have worked as well as they have. Nothing like a classic case of PEBKAC.
