Pondering the Imponderable

I got my Slackware 9.0 CDs yesterday. Not bad, since I just ordered them on Tuesday. The CDs come in a nice four-disc jewel case like the one the Diablo II discs came in. Here's what's on the discs:

All told, it's a good deal if you don't want to spend all day downloading ISOs (especially since the last three discs aren't available as ISOs) or if you just want to support the continuing development of Slackware.

Even More DOOM3

Both IGN and Computer and Video Games have also posted their impressions of DOOM3 multiplayer. Most interesting is that there isn't a bounding box anymore. You either hit an actual polygon on your enemy or you don't hit at all. Here's a bit from the latter preview:

When you get shot in multiplayer, you get a vision-blur effect, which really messes things up for you, makes it an onerous task indeed to shoot back. Your vision blurs and wobbles around as well, so you're not looking at the target anymore. Generally speaking, a great deal of blind panic is caused by these disorientating effects.

. . .

It's intense. You're still running, but not as fast as you do in Quake III; but when you do run into someone it goes a bit crazy. It's very hard to achieve headshots and so forth. But it's all just so incredibly detailed. Not that we ever doubted it, but we must stress again - the game looks amazing.

SCO Busts out the Stupid Stick

In case anyone thought that SCO's legal team actually intended to win their case, this article will prove them wrong. They are arguing that the GPL is invalid because it allows for unlimited copying while U.S. copyright law only allows for one backup copy to be made of any software. Oh, brother. Are we really sure this isn't a bad Saturday Night Live sketch? Thanks Slashdot.

On DOOM3 Multiplayer

HomeLanFed posted their impressions of DOOM3 multiplayer at QuakeCon and Shacknews got some screenshots of the level they're showing off. The level looks pretty sweet. The basic summary is: it's deathmatch, but prettier. Oh, yes, I'm looking forward to this one.
