Pondering the Imponderable

I know this site is starting to sound like a UT2K4 fan site, but hey, that's the game that's taking up the majority of my spare time. I like it a lot. I like how they've tweaked bombing run by not allowing a ball carrier to immediately translocate after a pass (to stop the "passing to yourself" tactic) and how the "speed" adrenaline ability drains more quickly if you have the ball (or flag in CTF for that matter). It forces you to pass and use teamwork to score.

I also decided that I needed to add another attack to my arsenal, so I've been working on shock rifle combos (alt-fire a plasma ball and blast it with the primary fire). Now that my aim is slowly returning, that's becoming a very nice option. Basically, I got sick of the bots doing it to me and decided to return the favor.

The Master comments: Well, since Id hasn't released DooM yet, and none of us are into MMORPGs, and most of the rest aren't playable on Linux anyway, I guess there's not much else to talk about. Heh :-)

Onslaught Source Released

Psyonix has released the C++ code for Onslaught in Unreal Tournament 2004. This should help mod makers design new vehicles. There's also a tutorial on that page with design tips for people making custom Onslaught maps.

UT2K4/Linux Karma Crash Fix

Ryan "icculus" Gordon has released updated binaries for the Linux version of Unreal Tournament 2004 to fix that nasty Karma crashing bug that was affecting so many people. There are also 64-bit binaries available for you AMD64 folks.

Update: Some people are complaining that they are still getting the same crash. I played a good amount tonight with the physics set on "high" and didn't get a crash. As always, YMMV.

New Onslaught Maps Released

As promised, Gamespot has released two new Onslaught maps for Unreal Tournament 2004. Unfortunately, you need to sign up for their service and be running Microsoft Satan^H^H^H^H^HXP to download them. I tried getting Konqueror to pretend that it was IE6 running on XP, but that didn't work. I'll post a link once someone has a mirror that the rest of us can use.

Update: Worthplaying has posted the 12mb package in a format that does not require that other O/S.

Update #2: I'm hearing that the "official" flag is set on these maps, meaning that clients cannot download them from servers. I also had a problem with UT2K4 segfaulting the first time I tried to run it after unzipping the maps into my ut2004/Maps directory. On the Atari forums, a Windows user had the same experience. After that, however, the game has run fine for me. The maps seem very cool, although more strenuous on my system than many others.

Update #3: (and the last one, I promise) I just got done playing some Onslaught with bots on ONS-Aridoom. It was quite a bit of fun. There are a lot of Goliaths on a relatively small map (actually, there's a lot of vehicles in general). There are also a good amount of AVRiLs so things stay pretty balanced. I was in a three-Goliath formation attacking the base. Pretty impressive. The level's layout also make ambushing Goliaths pretty easy. Big things going boom . . . what's not to like?

New WordPerfect for Linux Soon is reporting that Corel will be selling a "proof of concept" version of WordPerfect for Linux at its online store on April 15. I'll will be very interested to see how this turns out. A few months ago, I started transitioning from WordPerfect 8 for Linux to 1.1. Before that, I had been a loyal WordPerfect user since about 1990 in the days of WordPerfect 5.x for DOS. If this is truly another native version that doesn't require old libc libraries, I may just snag it . . . as long as they don't want $300 for it. Thanks Slashdot.

Threewave 1.7 Released

The 1.7 version of Threewave's venerable CTF modification for Quake III Arena has been released. You can download it from the Threewave website and read the changelog to find out what's new. It's a 5.85M patch but you will need the full 187M 1.6 version installed first. Thanks Blue's News.
