- 1924: 14 year old Bobby Franks is murdered in a "thrill-killing" planned and executed by Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb, two University of Chicago students.
- 1927: Charles Lindbergh completes his solo flight of the Atlantic, landing near Paris.
- 1956: The United States explodes the first air-dropped hydrogen bomb over the Bikini Atoll in the Pacific.
- 1968: The nuclear-powered US submarine USS Scorpion was lost with all 99 hands.
- 1980: Ensign Jean Marie Butler becomes the first woman to graduate from a U.S. service academy, accepting her degree and commission from the Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT.
- 1991: former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was assasinated during national elections.
