- 1838: Iowa Territory was organized.
- 1897: The penknife later known as the "Swiss Army Knife" is patented.
- 1898: The Philippines are declared independent of Spain during the Spanish-American War.
- 1918: First Bombing Raid by American Aircraft conducted by six Army aircraft.
- 1937: The Soviet Union executed eight army leaders in a purge under Josef Stalin.
- 1939: The Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum was dedicated in Cooperstown, N.Y.
- 1967: The U.S. Supreme Court struck down state laws prohibiting interracial marriages.
- 1978: Serial killer David Berkowitz, known as the "Son of Sam," received the maximum penalty, 25 years to life in prison, with a recommendation that he spend the rest of his life in custody.
- 1979: 26-year-old cyclist Bryan Allen flew the man-powered Gossamer Albatross across the English Channel.
- 1990: The parliament of the Russian Federation formally declared its sovereignty.
