DOOM III Definitely Coming to Linux -- 7:03 pm CST, Update by A.T. Hun
id's John Carmack talked a bit about Linux during his speech about DOOM III at QuakeCon today. Here's what he had to say, courtesy of the good people at Linux Games:
- There will "absolutely" be a Linux port.
- The DOOM III codebase was brought up on Mac OSX recently by Graeme Devine, which should head off any major portability issues for Linux
- The only card drivers currently capable of running DOOM III on Linux are NVIDIA's (the game utilizes API extensions only available on Linux with their drivers); Carmack indicated that he would be open to assisting "credible" open source driver projects for other video cards.
Dare I say . . . w00t! Hey, ATi! How about getting some good Linux drivers for your sweet Radeon 9700 in the meantime?
