Printing in OpenOffice -- 11:27 pm CST, Update by A.T. Hun
I've spent far too much time today working on printing in OpenOffice in Linux. The good news is that the new 1.0.1 version fixed my main printing problem (it would only print in bold or painfully ugly). Now I'm just trying to tweak it so the output looks better. I think I've probably burned through about $15 worth of ink just trying various settings. Good thing we've got a good recycling program here . . .DOOM III Definitely Coming to Linux -- 7:03 pm CST, Update by A.T. Hun
id's John Carmack talked a bit about Linux during his speech about DOOM III at QuakeCon today. Here's what he had to say, courtesy of the good people at Linux Games:
- There will "absolutely" be a Linux port.
- The DOOM III codebase was brought up on Mac OSX recently by Graeme Devine, which should head off any major portability issues for Linux
- The only card drivers currently capable of running DOOM III on Linux are NVIDIA's (the game utilizes API extensions only available on Linux with their drivers); Carmack indicated that he would be open to assisting "credible" open source driver projects for other video cards.
Dare I say . . . w00t! Hey, ATi! How about getting some good Linux drivers for your sweet Radeon 9700 in the meantime?
NWN Linux Client Screenshot -- 6:58 pm CST, Update by A.T. Hun
Believe it or not, Bioware has posted a screenshot of the Neverwinter Nights client working in Linux! Check out their Linux client page to view the screenie. Granted, it's not much to look at, but it is working!Baseball Players Set Strike Date -- 11:38 am CST, Update by A.T. Hun
Because an average salary of $2 million is just barely enough to keep a ball player off food stamps, the baseball players' union set August 30 as a strike date. As a Detroit Tigers fan, I can only hope the players actually do strike and bring this train wreck of a season to a merciful end. I would also love it if a strike caused baseball as we know it to collapse so both the billionaire owners and their millionaire players get what they both richly deserve. It's to the point where I can't even stomach to watch SportsCenter because baseball highlights make me want to projectile vomit.
