Novell: We Own System V

Novell has issued a press release claiming that they own the patents and copyrights to UNIX System V, not SCO. Bruce Perens weighs in on this on Slashdot. Hopefully this will at least make SCO's suit against IBM more difficult. At the very least, it's nice to see Linux's friends speaking up.

UPDATE! SCO has issued this press release which seems indicate that they are back-pedalling. If this release is correct, I cannot see how they could justify sending threatening letters to corporations that use Linux. They can sue IBM for breach of contract, but they can do next to nothing about anything else. Anybody else smell a lawsuit?

UPDATE #2! Apparently SCO CEO Darl McBride has threatened to sue Linus Torvalds unless more companies license their stuff. That comment is at the end of that story. Maybe he should just sue his parents for naming him "Darl." $10 says that's the root of all of this :)

UPDATE #3! SCO's stock dropped almost 25% today. Anybody surprised?
